What is the Worst Thing About Every Pokémon Game?

No one dislikes Pokémon games more than Pokémon fans, they say. And since I am one, I guess that means I too must look at the less ideal aspects of the games. And since go big or go home is what they also say, I decided to just look at every main line game in the entire series and talk about what the worst thing about each of them is, from Red and Blue all the way to Scarlet and Violet.

CHAPTERS:
00:00 - Red, Blue and Yellow
01:55 - Gold, Silver and Crystal
03:58 - Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald
06:40 - FireRed and LeafGreen
08:30 - Diamond and Pearl
09:20 - Platinum
10:00 - HeartGold and SoulSilver
11:31 - Black and White
12:42 - Black and White 2
13:33 - X and Y
15:19 - Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
16:31 - Sun and Moon
17:54 - Ultra Sun and Moon
19:00 - Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee
19:34 - Sword and Shield
21:44 - Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
22:34 - Legends Arceus
23:22 - Scarlet and Violet

Chairman Rose isn’t treated seriously, the problem is his plan literally comes out of nowhere and everyone calls him dumb when he first brings it up. It’s hard to explain it to someone who he never played SwSh but it’s the most bizarre and awful plot line in Pokémon history

My main issue with generation 5 is all the stuff like berry growing that was tied to an online feature that doesn’t exist anymore.

Worst thing about Galar is the fact that every route is a straight line. The atmosphere of each one is unique but there’s no sense of exploration.

Paldea has the opposite problem: there’s so much open endedness, but every route and settlement looks the same as all the others.

For Diamond and Pearl, another bad thing about it is the type diversity… or lack there of. They knew they messed up when their Fire, Electric, and Ice specialists are forced to use Pokemon outside of their specialty. And let’s not forget the fire and grass specialists being required to use the region’s starter, something unheard of until that point.

remember game freak almost went bankrupt multiple times trying to make gen 1 so all those glitches make a lot of sense

I think Black and White would have more diversity if the Pokémon and evolution levels were distributed better. Too many of them appear too late game or evolve at like level 50+.

The thing that drove me nuts about Sword and Shield was the rail roading. The number of roadblocks to prevent you from going to new areas is numbing. Same with Gen VII. It isn't something natural like HM roadblocks or a bridge being up, it just NPCs standing around having a conversation and you have to turn back. Often several roadblocks in the region and it made linear games even more linear.

My favorite bit of jankiness in gen 1 has to be with the final battle against Giovanni in Pokémon Yellow. He leads off with a Dugtrio whose offensive moves are all ground type. Because of this, if you send out ANY flying-type Pokémon, that bird is effectively untouchable. You can even go so far as to catch a level 2 Pidgey fresh from Route 1, teach it Toxic, and it'll solo the Dugtrio in about 8 turns as the advanced poison status whittles away at Dugtrio's HP. The fact that Giovanni never thinks to swap out from Dugtrio to something that can actually hit the Pidgey makes it even funnier! He might burn off one of his healing items to prolong the battle, but the Toxic poison will more than compensate for it.

You can't blame X and Y for it's graphics. If you were there for day one you would have had your mind BLOWN that our Pokémon are in 3D within a hand-held device. Also, it was first in this aspect so anything afterwards should be a given that it would look nicer if that was the designers decision

I used to hate Chairman Rose for this reason, but then one of my friends said something that put it into a new perspective, and now I can't help but laugh:

"You know, I thought Chairman Rose was being really stupid when he decided to initiate the apocalypse and broadcast himself doing it live during and interrupting the most popular event in the entire country, all because of a supposed energy crisis that is 1000 years out. My guy, you are a billionaire CEO, do you not have a concept of consequences or are you so up your own rear about yourself that you think it is up to you to solve an energy crisis a literal millennia in the future?!

Due to recent events, I think I have a better understanding of Rose. He doesn't and yes he is."

I maintain Flare had the most potential among the villain teams-- they listen in on Holocaster conversations, they have one of their own as a mole in the E4 and who also works as a newscaster, and some implied plainclothes agents, on top of the whole mass murking plot, it's just they undercooked with them and don't build on any of that.

10:27 The remake literally increases the level of Kanto trainers by a whopping 10+, regular trainers going from the 30s to the 40s. The remake didn't fully fix the level curve but it's really weird how literally no one acknowledges that the remake made major changes & improvement to the level curve.

Giovanni only appears in a mystery gift event in hgss. Not part of the base game

Your takes on X and Y really feel like nitpicks tbh

Gen 5s real issue is how many things required outisde means like the Dream World. The second they shut down servers it killed so many things for those games. It really only lacks variety before the second gym.

How are X/Y ugly? I'm currently re-playing Y in preparation for Legends ZA. Visually speaking, they might be my favorites after SwSh. I see a lot of attention to detail and I think they did an amazing job with the camera perspectives. Lighting is also very well done.

For Gen 2 i would also say how annoying the roaming mechanics are and how difficult breeding was. It took so much time! Gen 3 was how the entire Pokédex was essentially scattered between 5 mainline games, and 2 game cube games.

7:52 I have used the daycare in Kanto because I completed the Pokédex in Fire Red. And some Pokémon have such high level evolutions that I would send them to the daycare so they would level up by themselves while I was focusing on leveling up the easier ones or catching whatever I hadn't yet. I used the daycare on route 5 to level up, and the one on Sevii Islands to get the child of x, so I don't have to catch its base form, so having two daycares was actually useful for me (ngl tho, I often forgot the one on Route 5 existed and then stumble upon a dumb dragon that I needed a lot of money to get out of the daycare and go "neat! Just five more levels to go!", put it back, and promptly forget about it...)

The intro for Violet and Scarlet should get an honourable mention.
Good god, that took SO LONG. SO DAMN LONG. From the intro with Nemona to the trip with Mirai/Koraidon to everything at the school.
Such a damn shame that clicking to SKIP CUTSCENES really only skips cutscenes that don't require you to pick a choice - in a game where choice responses don't matter anyway. Makes the game an awful chore to replay.
Teal Mask is the same way, but Indigo Disk isn't quite as bad.
Amazing characters and story though.

BDSP's biggest issue isn't the artstyle. Not by a long haul. It's that it was outsourced to a 3rd party who read the assignment and followed it to the letter, creating a faithful modern remake of D&P. Faithful to a fault. Outside of elimimating HMs (massive win for it tbh) and making the E4 the hardest they have ever been, they do nothing else that would enhance them like previous remakes did, and didn't even keep the improvements from platinum (not locking new evos behind postgame, giratina story, etc). Because of the HM eliminations alone, I would easily call them better than original D&P, but not Platinum.
