📚Description: When the "SG '61 Faded" was first introduced, it was 2200 with a maestro vibrola on it. For a "stripped down" model, it seemed kind of weird to put the expensive, hard-to-keep-in-tune vibrola on it so I was happy to see a new "faded '61 SG" come out. This was initially meant to be a new guitar day for a viewer of the show... but this is the gibson.com exclusive one like it was supposed to be. We will review this guitar with '57 classics hopefully next week!

If you are interested in this guitar after that next video has been made (I plan to do a brief comparison, please email me austin@troglysguitarshow.com

A run of Custom colour SG Faded would be pretty cool

I prefer the square fret marker standards from the early '70's. It was almost too flimsy, to the point that you vou can't lay your picking arm on it without affecting intonation. Mine had a cherry finish, and I made a stainless steel pickguard for it. Same one used by Paul Weller, Lita Ford, and Jagger in '78.

what a coincidence, i just bought an sg 61 stop bar last night. my first ever “proper” guitar, and first gibson as well. if you see a juicy dark fretboard/dark red example on sweetwater that says “sold”, that was me.

I installed ‘57 Classics with nickel plating in an LP and left in the case for half of a summer day outside under shade. The covers became permanently etched with those patterns as the case lining glue offgassed in the heat. While making a quick method of aging, it ruined the new look I was hoping to maintain.

I have a 2017 faded cherry sg and it’s a great guitar with every note ringing true on the neck and was $550 used.

I wish Gibson would offer the custom color series with the Vibrola

I just got the faded sg with the 57’ pickups and it is definitely a brighter red. Seems similar is just about every other way(neck shape etc.) I’m very happy with the satin finish. Great guitar.

I have one of those SG faded with the ebony fretboards and crescent moon inlays. In general, those old faded guitars are a steal. You can still find them for like $800 last time I looked.

I’ve got ‘57 Classics in my ES 339. Great sounding pickups.

With regards to the piece of rosewood on this SG, that's my favorite look for rosewood! That's GORGEOUS!

9:28 That is WILD, the Neck Pickup Tone Capacitor is wired in a modern control circuit style, while the Bridge Pickup Tone Capacitor utilizes the '50s style wiring.
That is really very interesting, I wonder if there is a specific reason for the modern wiring on the Neck Pickup!

More faded colors? @Trog, I'm playing my faded gold Futura with Sidewinder P90H, overwound Burstbucker and blower switch with coiltaps right now! Those things came in 5 different colors!

I love color variation in rosewood and ebony. I know that opinion is not common, but wood is pretty cool looking sometimes.

$200 either way, you should get what you want. To me, the Gibson SG Standard '61 in TV Yellow looks pretty great for $1,800.

@stu_g13 1 month ago

If they did the faded SG in teal or tv yellow I’d order it immediately

That pick-up cover discolouration is not a defect, it is a feature. This is Gibson’s self-relicking technology and is detailed in the granted US Patent 11,602,633 from 2023 (inventor T. Murphy, assignee Gibson, Inc.). Information from an insider, who wishes to remain anonymous because they do not have the approval to speak publicly, indicates that usually Gibson adds about 79 USD to the price of a guitar for the pick-up cover self-relicking specification. The patent states that this is a combination of a special alloy for the plating of the cover combined with reactive microfibres in the lining of the case. In June of 2024, Gibson licensed this technology to a jewellery manufacturer for the production of antique-looking, non-gold, pieces (source: JCK Online).

That's a good looking SG. It sounds sweet, too. I prefer the smaller pickguard to the full 'bat-wing' type on my SG Special faded. Variations in rosewood fingerboards keep them distinctive and interesting. Thanks.

Finally with headstock angle measurements 🙏🙏🙏
Super cool guitar, wish they made more Leftys (also from epiphone...)

@joshuafrahm8778 1 month ago

They need to bring back the early 00's (or late 90s?) Faded Special with the ebony board and crescent inlays, as an entry level model like it was back then.

I remember wanting an SG for years got one and hated it. Being left handed and finding one in a Walnut finish I leaped, but the damn thing had fret sprouts and the chunkiest neck ever.

I to this day prefer the Johnson guitar some luthier traded to me for a EHX memory toy pedal.

Still want an SG again. May try again. They're beautiful.
