Great context and summary on some of the most baffling controversies we hear about 2nd and third hand and through bad twitter ai translations. Also ridiculous timing with Punk talking about EWC setups and Japanese players adding on after punk pressuring them to a degree. Might need to do a part 2 lol

My thoughts are, when you are in the "public eye", just assume someone is waiting for or planing your downfall.

These video essays never fail to transform me from a Hoe of Darkness into a Hoe of Light. The difference between a profession and a hobby is forcing yourself to work on something even when you don’t want to.

“The customer is always right…on matters of taste”. The full quote gets forgotten all the time 😭

watching handcam footage of tournaments pre-SF4 and just hearing what players and people said would shock the shit outta SF6 viewers

As a working artist, I felt that last point the hardest. When you become “professional” at something you should treat it as a profession. You should show up regularly to do work, even when you don’t feel like it.

On the flip side, if you are a professional at something others consider a fun hobby, they shouldn’t assume doing it professionally is easy, or that it’s like “never working a day in your life.” All work is work, and doing work in a professional, deliberate, consistent way shouldn’t be dismissed just because of what type of work is being done.

keep it moving obama

And now you know why the Japanese never tell you how they really feel.

I was unaware of the true lore behind "no human rights" thank you for educating me, obama!

RIP Tanukana's human rights😭

I love Obama video essays.

I always love a new Majin video about the eSports scene in Japan

One of the things I also remember about the dogura situation was that he just came back from an overseas tournament. I know we say treat esports like a job, but you get days off with a 9-5.

That's the awkward part of being professional especially in media or as personality. When your a professional baker once your done baking you can be off. When your professional personality you have to be always on.

A case study of vibes we've been hearing about for decades at point, packed into a well documented, well paced video?

I think we've got another all timer on our hands, gonna have to keep this one in the back pocket, alongside info that make you realize "Damn, making video games actually IS hard"

RE: Professionalism.

MMA fighter by the name of Carlos Prates. Dude actively smokes cigs, drinks frequently and has an overall indifference to MMA at large. With all that in mind, you wouldn't be wrong for asking yourself, "how is this dude in the UFC?". Then you see bro in the octagon and there is where his professionalism shines; a consummate martial artist with a mind actively looking for ways to implement his game (to great effect, word to Leon Edwards.).

So, all that to say, the obsession with a "professional" image is honestly detrimental cuz there are true paragons in any profession that never get their flowers or the opportunities they deserve because they don't play the "game" of professionalism (the kayfabe, if you will.), they just live that shit and it shows in the output.

Ain't nobody gonna treat fighting games that seriously when 95% of players don't get paid, 4% get about a minimum wage, and only 1% is walking away with some actual good money (which most of the time they don't even get by participating in events, rather they get it trough YouTube/Twitch content creation). All these Japanese "scandals" sound incredible cringe, and is just giving a bunch of trolls immense power to do harm. They want people to act like professional athletes, while also paying them 90% less and also using them to do marketing for their commercial products.

Getting sent to gulag for saying anything on the camera

I remember try to follow the Momochi situation a bit back in the day.

He was having a pretty good competitive run around that time and to hear all that bs he was dealing with during it was wild, and then to win and not get paid. SMH
