Little fun fact, the movie Black Swan payed homage to Perfect Blue, some scenes are direct references

I'm so happy this wasn't an April fools joke

HOLY REFRESH PULL

No actual shot, not the Old Favorite! This is a borderline comfort movie at this point, baby’s first psychological thriller. Love it. No notes.

EVERY SHUSH THE PUG IS SPEAKING

the most unsettling part to me is when she’s flickering between scenes and can only check mima’s room to know what she did. she says quietly, “i guess i went to harajuku today” to herself and a chill runs up my spine just typing it

And have I seen about 50 Perfect Blue breakdown videos? Yes, but this is PUGSRs Perfect Blue video so we’re LOCKED IN

Can't believe you made this video right now! Yesterday I watched Perfect blue for the first time! I needed this videos right know hahahaah

Lain is my favorite anime and your breakdown is why I subscribed (along with the book reviews) so to see you cover yet another one of my favorite psychological anime is super cool

Thank you so much for this pugsr! Today we had to put my childhood dog down, but coming home and seeing you do a video on one of my favorite anime movies has made it slightly better.

You are still under 100,000? What  a crime against humanity. You are a true hero to us all Pugsr.

Babe wake up, our Lord posted

There is actually WAY more social critique in the movie than just the superficial idol/entertainment industry points. Satoshi Kon said he wanted to capture how it feels to grow up as a girl. The idol becoming the actress is symbolic for Mima growing up. Idols in japan are largely associated with innocence while Mimas role in double bind forces her to break that innocence. That's why there is so much focus on the public reacting to her changing image. Kon wanted to portray how it feels as a girl to get to the point where you are sexualized but then shamed for being perceived as sexual. How men feel entitled to look at you that way and call you a slut when your sexuality doesn't exclusively belong to them. The meaning of the show double bind also relates exactly to that: being expected to be two contradicting things. And Mimas mental breakdown is largely her reaction to not being able to meet the expectations society puts on her, because it is impossible to do both at the same time. She doesn't want to stay a childlike idol without true agency and instead be regarded as a competent independent woman, so that is why she looks up to the main actress of double bind. But to become that well respected competent actress that she is also shown to be in the ending scene, she had to go through that hellish experience. Rumi is not a true main villain, her stalker isn't either. Both are symbolic of different parts of society projecting their expectations onto Mima, trying to own their very own image of her and being entitled into immersing in it, punishing Mima when she deviates.

There is a brilliant deep dive analysis video on YouTube by a channel called Hammered Out titled "Perfect Blue Explained. No Good Roles for Women." He goes into much more depth.

Have you considered talking about paranoia agent, since there’s a lot of interesting things to talk about in that?🐱

Started the video, 10 minutes in, paused, went and watched the movie, and then came back.
I've always heard that this movie is great, but this video really sold it!

Ayyyyy keep up the good work my man!

Absolute masterpiece. One of the best psychological thrillers, live action or animated. Thanks for covering it. Reminded why anime can be godly.

do Paprika next

Oh wow I’m so glad to see you cover this, Pugsr!! I love older anime shows and movies, I just really enjoy the look of the art style ❤ I also just love the use of animation to tell stories, unfortunately in American culture cartoons or animated films and shows are seen as being for children, where Japanese anime shows it’s just as effective at telling serious stories as it is at creating things like One Piece or Naruto, it’s just a style choice to them it’s not for kids, and I really love that

What a strange april fool's
