Dope band. I been just recently turned on to them myself. These dudes are legit. The drummer is off the chain. I've been digging every song live pretty much.

I like how the song is titled "Fear of a Blank Planet". It's a commentary on society being overstimulated to the point where they're desensitized, where nothing is exciting anymore. They becoje isolated because human interaction is not as exciting as playing a game, watching a movie, being on the internet. For some, that boredom can cause depression, cynicism, alienation. Some people turn to medication as a cure all. It's not that some people don't need it, but it tends to be over-prescribed. When people are terminally bored and desensitized, they may try to find ways to generate excitement that are destructive, dangerous, or harmful. There's so much noise in this world, so much to tempt us, so much to keep us from interaction, to keep us solitary. It's important to appreciate everything, everybody, serve others graciously, and go outside and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

"The drum part right there" EXACTLY!!

To me, this is still their best album conceptually and musically.

I gotta confession to make MommaOG this is the first time I have listened to Porcupine Tree. It’s got a simmering quality like it could explode at any point and I like it. I’m going to take a look at the others you have done then go on a journey myself.

This song is, unfortunately, an accurate depiction of teenagers and young adults, in general, today. Not everyone of course, but it's most common especially since the advent of social media. Kids are tuned out, bored, constantly scrolling, and have answers to almost any question at their finger tips. You used the word "ominous" a few times. This perfectly describes the feeling this song conjurs with both music AND the lyrics. Great reaction and thank you for continuing to react to Porcupine Tree!!

I saw them live 4 times up to the Fear tour n 2006 in Glasgow a truly fantastic band. Fish of Marillion watched a good part of the show with me and my daughter.

Not something I've experienced but this song hits me hard with the empathy feels.

Just a reminder that John Wesley and Colin Edwin have a new collaboration called Voyage 35 where they're revisiting early PT music. They just released a video for their cover of "Nostalgia Factory" from the first PT album. It's very different compared to this, much more in the vein of Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd.

Album is loosely based on a book called Lunar Park. The songs make a lot more sense in the context of that book, so I'd suggest you get a broad overview of that book if you listen to any more songs from this one.

That was a very good analysis of a difficult lyric to unravel. I absolutely LOVE this band.
"Anaesthetise" from the same Tilburg concert should be your next stop, an incredible piece of live music.

Fun fact for this track MOG - you could have actually done a triple play as there is also a live version done by the current PT lineup from their 2022 tour Closure/Continuation which is equally brutal. Worth checking out just on its own. Oh and while there - you mentioned how often PT gets "hard" during their tracks - not always though - from that same 2022 DVD you can find on YouTube another of their tracks called "I Drive the Hearse" which is a classic mix of Steven Wilson ominous but equally strangely beautiful. Really worth checking out! The guitar work by Randy McStine (the replacement for John Wesley) is just stunning. Keep the SW and PT coming!

The video of the studio version of this song was actually banned from broadcast in the US because of the subject matter.

There is an official video on Porcupine Tree's channel (I always go there first as many songs are on there in HQ) and it's very good but it cuts out the best part - the slower instrumental near the end.

@fluff1353 5 months ago

"Ominous." Yeah. That's one of the words you could use to describe PT. Been a long time fan. Been ominoused quite a lot. 😁

Some broader context regarding the band.
The drummer Gavin harrison is regarded as probably the best rock drummer currently. The greatest complement was he joined Robert Fripp's King Crimson surrounded by some of the worlds best musicians. He now is in a band called Pineapple Thief a similiar band to Porcupine Tree.
Steve Wilson himself has gone on to a terrific solo career but also is well known for remixing bands such as Yes Jethro tull , Pink Floyd, etc into amazing living mixes
