The UK Government is now openly telling households to prepare for emergencies. But why now, and what exactly are they preparing us for?
In this video, I look at the Government's Prepare campaign, the latest UK National Risk Register, and the threats that could seriously disrupt everyday life in Britain. War, cyber attacks, pandemics, national power cuts, water failures, AI disruption and wider infrastructure problems all sound very different, but the consequences for ordinary households can look surprisingly similar.
Hint: No, the UK government isn't hiding anything, in fact they are publishing more than you think!

The Government's official Prepare website now encourages households to think about emergency supplies, plans, power cuts, water outages and other disruptions. The 2026 National Risk Register also sets out the Government's assessment of serious risks facing the UK.
The point of this video isn't to predict which emergency happens next.
It's to ask a much more useful question.
What stops working?
If the power goes down, the taps stop running, card payments fail, mobile networks disappear or shops cannot restock, many of the preparations you need are exactly the same regardless of what caused the problem.
Food.
Water.
Medication.
Lighting.
Backup power.
Cash.
Communications.
A sensible emergency plan.
That is what sensible preparedness is really about.
