Achara and Ashleigh check out the classic musical comedy The Blues Brothers for the first time! Ex-con Jake and his soulful brother Elwood hit the road on a high-octane, music-fueled mission from God to save the orphanage that raised them—one wild gig (and car chase) at a time.

The Blues Brothers (1980) was directed by John Landis (Animal House, An American Werewolf in London, Trading Places) and stars John Belushi (Saturday Night Live, Animal House, 1941) as “Joliet” Jake Blues and Dan Aykroyd (Ghostbusters, Trading Places, Saturday Night Live) as Elwood Blues. The film also features a stellar supporting cast including Carrie Fisher (Star Wars, When Harry Met Sally, Hannah and Her Sisters), John Candy (Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, Cool Runnings), James Brown (The T.A.M.I. Show, Rocky IV, Doctor Detroit), Aretha Franklin (Amazing Grace, The Big Chill, Blues Brothers 2000), Ray Charles (Ballad in Blue, Spy Hard, Blues Brothers 2000), and Cab Calloway (The Big Broadcast, Stormy Weather, Minnie the Moocher).

Fun fact: The boy who tried to steal Ray's guitar grew up to be Argyle, the hero limo driver in Die Hard.

Cab Calloway….That‘s how he rolled back in the 1930’s and 40‘s. Long tailed Tux and strutting his stuff. His song „Minnie the Moocher“ was recorded in 1931. He was also the first African-American to have a nationally syndicated radio program. There are many great artists in this movie and John B. and Dan A. had a lot to do in bringing them all together. Cheers

Trivia: The clerk that they give the money to at the end?? A very young Steven Spielberg!!

I love how the country bar patrons didn't stop chucking bottles at the band even when they started playing music they loved.

Elwood: "It's a 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark...and we're wearing sunglasses."😎

Jake: "Hit it!!"😎

They even released albums and had live concerts as well.

The band is stacked full of REAL deal talent.

These guys had a deep love and respect for the Blues. Not only did this film and their SNL performances expose more people to the Blues and drum up interest, but their venues that they opened, The House Of Blues, did a LOT to keep the Blues going.

“The use of unnecessary violence in the apprehension of the Blues Brothers…has been approved.” 😂 Love it!

I was the Executive Chef of one of Dan Aykroyds winery's years ago, in Niagara.
I was lucky enough to spend a day with him for a celebrity dinner and as a long time fan, since SNL, he did not disappoint.
Funniest person I've ever met.
After I told him the Blues Brothers was my all time favorite, we hit it off great and laughed all day long.
The music was real and the comedy was top notch.

One thing that never ceases to amaze people is that John Belushi did his own dancing all throughout the movie. Even the cartwheels and flips in the church scene were all Belushi. I make no estimate of how much coke he did to accomplish this amazing feat, but Belushi was a great talent who left us far too soon.

The inmate at the end who was the first to jump up on the table to dance was Joe Walsh, lead guitarist for The Eagles. ✌🏼😎🇺🇸

You're one of the few reactors who actually get this movie and recognize the famous artists in it.

YES!

Frank Oz, voice of Miss Piggy, plays the Prison guy. Paul Reubens plays the waiter in the Mr Fabulous scene. Steven Spielberg plays the Tax clerk

My favorite part was the credits where they showcased most of the Blues cameo singers and then also put in a shot of the crew. So much respect and class! None of the blues soloists are around any longer but thanks to this movie generations that would never have known of them (or the blues) will be exposed to their wonderful music.

@johnscott4196 1 year ago

When you hear that this all began with a skit from Saturday Night Live where Belushi and Ackroyd actually did this singing and dancing it's even more impressive.

This is legitimately one of the greatest movies ever made. The star power in this cast is unbelievable.

Carrie Fisher and Dan Aykroyd were engaged at this time. The Empire Strikes Back & The Blues Brothers were in the theater at the same time.

The Mall was the abandoned Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, IL. They had crews come in and set up all the stores fully stocked with merchandise. They had to hire security because people were doing some midnight shopping before the shooting began. The mall was partially torn down and then it stopped, a fence went around it and it was finally torn down around 12 years ago, I drove past the ruins daily for 20 years.
