Thank you for your story on William. Well done in giving us background on an important historical transformation. Too bad William and his partner had to suffer. So proud of their way of binding their lives together with their names.

Much like informal adoptions, civil (or common-law) partnerships that can be shown to predate legislative legitimacy should have a legal pathway to access benefit and entitlement made available because of current legislative protections.

does the UK NOT have publicly & legally searchable property records that would tell the researchers immediately if a deceased owned property. That would be a great place to start. It would also show if there was any mortgage or lien on any such property.

Quite surprised that so many people died without children, not just this episode, but across the series. I understand there was a shortage of males after the Great War, but this also occurs on both sides of it. Not a bad thing of course, but not what I was expecting.

"If a check arrives we'll all drink a toast" ... no check, no toast. Sorry, David, that's the way it works in our family.

Why not asking for a passport or ID-card before an official act?
I find it very weird that people can live under a different name, while having a house, a pension or a bank account.
And why not making a will for free with this heir-hunting companies?
Different country, different laws, but a lot of trouble ...
