The movie you're looking for is John Huston's 1975 "The Man Who Would Be King" based on the Rudyard Kipling novel starring Sean Connery and Michael Caine!  Closest to El Borak as we've gotten although the film characters' aims are decidedly less noble.

Notice how the Tim Bradstreet illustrations in the Del Rey book are modeled on actor Thomas Jane?  He's a comic lover and the sort of guy who'd jump at playing Gordon!

Now where's that Cormac Mac Art breakdown?

Marvel adapted El Borak stories for Conan.

I bet a 10 year old Howard thought up brilliant games to play with his friends lol

That intro went hard. BY CROM

As a lifelong orientalist and colonial romantic the El Borak series hit me like a lightning bolt when I first stumbled across it. The Wild West meets the Wild East. Chef's Kiss Indescribably good.

I had no idea about Borak. Thanks for the tip.

I am looking for some non-Conan stories, and I believe I have found it!

Read and reviewed the Del Rey collection a couple of years ago.  It really shows on how well Howard could carry stories just on action alone.

I just ordered El Borak and other desert adventurers yesterday.

Oh man. I didn't know about these and I was named after the Robert E. Howard stories before the movie. I can't wait.

I love your enthusiasm, young man! I've been a fan of REH for 60 years and I am greatly enjoying fans like yourself finding out about how great Howard is and are telling other fans! Great work! The Country of the Knife is my favorite El Borak story!

Love El Borak almost as much as I love Howard's writings on Conan.
Oh, and the guy's poetry is to die for.  Literally.  Dark, beautiful and morose

I had forgotten about these stories. Read Son of the White Wolf when I was 10 or 11 ( a long time ago). Inspired me to write my own adventures.  Thanks god posting.

I'm glad I got the Del Rey edition of EL Borak.

I have a suspicion "The Fire of Ashurbanapal" was to be an El Borak tale but he likely changed his mind to Lovecraft being out of place for that character...

Thanks Tim.  El Borak goes on my "to be found" list.

Three bladed doom is my favorite El Borak. ⚔️

I read the Del Ray editions a few years ago & loved them !!!

👍Thanks Tim! I don't trust Hollywood anymore either.

Thank you for the recommendation. I just ordered the three-story volume.
