Do you really need to attend one of South Africa’s top hockey schools to have a chance of making it to the highest level?
In this episode of SASH Performance, Dawie de Villiers sits down with Wayne Marsden, one of the most experienced figures in South African schools hockey, to unpack what the pathway really looks like for talented young hockey players.
Wayne has spent more than three decades involved in school, provincial and national schools hockey - coaching at schools including SACS, Grey High School and Kearsney College, coaching provincial teams, and serving as Chairman of South African Schools Hockey Boys from 2014 to 2023. He currently serves as Vice-Chairman of South African Schools Hockey with responsibility for International Affairs.
We discuss:
• Do players at major hockey schools really have a better chance?
• How much does exposure influence selection?
• How do selectors find talented players from smaller schools?
• What are selectors actually looking for?
• Can playing at a powerhouse school sometimes work against you?
• How important is coaching during the school years?
• What should a talented player do if they aren't being noticed?
• How important is club hockey?
• Should parents move their child to another school purely for sport?
• What separates the players who eventually progress to higher levels?
If you're a young hockey player, parent, coach or anyone involved in the development of school sport, this conversation offers a valuable look inside the South African hockey pathway.
