Very nice video I love sam maloof work

Sam is a hero to anyone who cares about wood and crafting it. Thank you for sharing this.

Back in the early 80’s Sam did a three day class/demonstration in Denver. It was amazing to witness him in action. His approach to and how he came up with the proportion and configuration of his chairs was so incredibly simple  and organic. One of my most cherished experiences in a 40 year career as a cabinet maker is to have had the honor to sit one day and actually have lunch with Sam Maloof.

I love his sculptural style, wood selection, lustrous finishes, and certainly, his personal story.

Sam Maloof is a fascinating study in the evolution of a woodworking style. His life and his work continue to fascinate and inspire.
Thanks for sharing the video tour. 👍❤️

These features you do are really valuable. Thanks to you both.

In the early 1990’s I had the opportunity to visit the Maloof residence before it was moved to its present location.  I was (and still am) living in Glendale about forty miles west of Alta Loma via the 210 freeway.  A co-worker had left their position at the company we worked at and moved to Claremont, a short distance from the Maloof residence.  She was aware of my interest in Sam’s work and mentioned that the Maloof home was also their showroom of sorts and welcomed visitors.  (A quick aside: I first encountered Maloof’s work in a woodworking tool store in west Los Angeles called “The Cutting Edge” (I think).  They had on display a Maloof rocker in their shop.  Its design was something unlike anything I had ever seen and made quite an impression.)  On a Saturday I drove out to Claremont, picked up my friend and we drove to Maloof’s place.  I’m not sure why, but I felt uneasy about showing up empty handed and had purchased a bouquet of flowers.  When we arrived at Maloof’s I saw two doors to the residence and was unsure which was the main entrance.  I chose the larger of the two (still painted light blue) and knocked.  Alfreda opened and peeked around the door and informed us this was the door to the shop and could we use the front door.  Immediately it occurred to me that, of course, the larger door was needed to move material into and finished pieces out of the shop.  I recall the handle and latch on the front door was obviously hand crafted.  Tom, like you, I immediately became aware of the loose bricks that comprised the floor.  They moved slightly under foot and made a soft clinking sound.  I presented the flowers to Alfreda and remember she was so genuinely surprised by them.  She informed us that Sam was not at home; he was at his doctor’s office in Claremont.  After escorting us around the home and answering our questions, she asked where I parked.  I told her in the carport.  “Oh, that’s where Sam parks, you should move it, he’ll be back shortly”.  So, I immediately and quickly ran outside and moved the car.  It wasn’t until we were leaving that Sam returned and we met him outside in the driveway clutching a bunch of prescription bottles against his chest with one hand.  Even though I was at least a head taller and thirty pounds heavier, my hand felt small and weak in his when we shook hands.  His hands told quite a story of a lifetime in the craft.  We spoke for a while in the driveway before moving inside.  He was so gracious and soft-spoken.  I noticed a piece that seemed somewhat out of place.  It was a small lectern, the type meant to be placed on a table or stand.  He informed me that it was commissioned by the head of some corporation but was rejected because it didn’t sufficiently conceal the papers they would be referencing during speeches.  I was quite surprised, it was done in walnut and looked perfect in design and execution.  Although it was small in comparison to most of the pieces in his home, it made a strong impression in a quiet way, just like the man that made it.

I miss your videos
