Felix Lighter is played by Jack Lord. He could not reprise the role in Goldfinger because he was casted in his own television show Hawaii Five-0. The original Hawaii Five-0 television series lasted 12 years and made Jack Lord a household name with his catchphrase “Book em Dano murder one”

Among other story formula tropes, "Dr. No" also establishes the Bond series penchant for featuring news items from the current affairs of the time and a recurring connection with the US space Program (which will be seen again in "You Only Live Twice", "Diamonds are Forever", and "Moonraker".

Sean Connery, a working-class Scot, credited director Terence Young with turning him into James Bond by taking him to his tailor on Sevile Row and had him make Connery custom-made suits. The producers were so impressed with Young's work that they offered him a cut of the movie's profits (rare at that time since directors, like actors, were hired employees) but he had to decline because it would have meant him having to take a reduced up-front salary and he couldn't afford to as he lived a James Bond-like lifestyle.

In movies made before the Internet it is important to pay close attention at the beginning when plot elements are explained. M asks Bond if he knows what "toppling" is and Bond explains. Dr No is throwing the guidance systems of the rockets off using atomic power. The idea comes from a misconception that arose prior to World War Two that Germany was working on a way of stopping engines using radio beams. They were actually developing their radar systems and had to tell cars to turn off their motors during the tests.

10:25 from 1935 to 1970 “take him for a ride” was gangster, slang for “Take him out to the desert and shoot him”

Actually, they wanted to start with Thunder Ball because it was the hottest selling novel of the James Bond series. That was tied up in legal battle.

The year 1962, when Dr.No came out, America had launched its first man into space, with the flight of Alan Sheppards, Mercury/Redstone,  Freedom 7 on 5/5/1961 and followed by the successful orbital flights, thru 1962, of the Mercury Program with J.Glenn ,
S Carpenter, W.Schirra and G.Cooper.
America was in a manned space-flight frenzy and it's probabIy the reason they introduced Bond with
Dr.No, to jump on the bandwagon!
It was a great time, for a 13 yr. old boy, to be alive!👍

Just remember that if you're watching movies and release order when you get to Never Say Never Again that precedes octopussy even though it was not made by Eon Productions

Good reaction! James bond films are always fun. They have a certain British tally-ho charm. That theme song is one of the world's best ever. The next two are "From Russia With Love" and "Goldfinger" which are legendary. "From Russia With Love" got 2x the budget of Dr No and became a blockbuster film. It has been recognized as one of the best British films of all time. "Goldfinger" got a budget equal to the previous two combined and introduced many of the iconic elements of the franchise, incl the Aston Martin, the super gadgets, exotic locales, and the visually stunning opening sequence and individual theme songs by Dame Shirley Bassey (who sang the theme for three James Bond films). It became the fastest grossing film of all time, breaking box office records and even causing a theater in NYC to stay open 24 hours a day to meet demand.
When I was 10 (in the late 70s), I read "Casino Royale" and my pre-teen brain almost exploded from the excitement of this book. It was more exciting than any of my comic books, which I didn't think was possible. After some of the exciting parts, I remember literally panting as if I was actually there. James Bond became a personal hero, even bigger than any of my comic book heroes. It's almost like, after reading Casino Royale, I became a man - at 10 years old - who read books with no pictures... for fun.

The term Limey's, goes back to 18th  and 19th centuries when the English Navy ruled the seas. Due to the long sea journey's the British sailors  were coming down with scurvy from lack of citrus fruit, so to aleviate the condition, they would stock the ships with limes = Limey's

Coming to Dr No for the first time, particularly if all you’ve ever known is Daniel Craig, is a culture shock. And you will find stuff a bit bewildering. And slow. But persist, it’s worth it.

Sean Connery was the perfect James Bond, cool, charismatic, intelligent and oh that voice!  No-one has been able to replicate his introduction:  "James, James Bond.'  It is deep, gravelly and incredibly seductive.  Though there have been lots of fun Bonds since, the only one who I really think did the franchise justice was Daniel Craig who was brilliant.  Yes, it's slow by comparison to today's fast-action overload but one adjusts to the time and the place.

Yes Myley so excited for your James Bond journey! You have a lot to look forward to with the newest movies (Daniel Craig is the best Bond imo). Excited to join you on this adventure buddy! 😃

I like your review. I can understand why (younger) people find the pacing too slow and perhaps the  action too mild and there are not enough gadgets and stuff, but for me these sixties Bond movies are gold. Pure gold. For me, Bond is pure escapism, and with these typical 60's colours, settings, designs, music and atmosphere they provide me with the maximum form of escapism. It also highlights, for me, the Bond crew at their best; they had to be creative with not so much money in the beginning and were able to create a 'Rolls Royce" feeling with the budget for a 'Mini'. The contribution of John Barry is also enormous. He 'only' did the arrangement of the James Bond theme here (which by the way is a huge difference with the original of Monty Norman), but during the other films in the sixties his sound is incredible. But the biggest factor is Sean. He just IS James Bond. So, I hope you will enjoy the other Bonds of the sixties, because I obviously do  ;-)

The thing the photographer girl hit Quarrel with was an old-fashioned flashbulb from the 1960s.  They were made of glass.

"Limey" is a derogatory name for British people coming from the days when England had a massive navy and some of their sailors came down with lyme disease.

Fleming did, in fact, sell the rights to CR and it was made into a TV movie in 1954. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGNMKT-6i4Y and  was used as the source material for a James Bond parody in 1967. Yes, DR. NO was chosen first for budget reasons and because the story was close to being anachronistic because Jamaica was on the verge of home rule.

I hope you do the second one, From Russia, with Love. The improvement over the first one is remarkable.
