"On a Sea of Glass" - TITANIC 113 Anniversary Livestream

Part-Time Explorer

This year, I am pleased to invite Tad Fitch, J. Kent Layton, and Bill Wormstedt -- the historians and authors behind the books 'On a Sea of Glass: The Life & Loss of the RMS Titanic' and 'Recreating Titanic and Her Sisters: A Visual History' -- to team up with me yet again to commemorate, in real time, the anniversary of the Titanic disaster. We invite you to join us at 9:30pm EDT, 14-15 April 2024 on my YouTube Channel Part-Time Explorer when we go live.

This year, we are honored to be joined by special guests Ken Marschall, renowned artist and the foremost visual historian of the Titanic and her sisters; Don Lynch, Titanic historian and author, and advisor on the James Cameron film Titanic; and Mark Chirnside, maritime and Olympic-class liner historian and author.

We have some exciting things in store for all those who join us: a brief update on the forthcoming HFX Studios' Lusitania experience "Lusitania: The Greyhound's Wake", as well as one on our upcoming book with the History Press titled "Lusitania: An Illustrated Biography".

It was some 12 years ago, in 2014, when I began a tradition of commemorating the sinking through these streams. Join us in real-time and pose questions that our panel will attempt to answer..

I would like to take a moment and thank all the historians who made the 113th Titanic Commemorative Livestream possible. Ever since I began attending the PTE annual livestreams in 2022, I have learnt many stories that I had never known about prior. Thank you to all the historians for sharing these stories and for keeping the memory of Titanic and all those who were onboard alive.

I brought my 90 year old grandma to the movie because being born in 1906 she was in 1st grade and said nothing in her lifetime impacted her more, not being alive for cars, planes, TV, or eating her first orange. Titanic upset everyone’s beliefs and made her have nightmares of what drowning in freezing darkness after trusting God to not sink the ship was so disturbing, filling the news. She also said no women were so loose as Rose in that film. But she still glad she saw the movie with me.

I remember watching the James Cameron 1997 film when I was 8 years old and despite the obvious Hollywood fluff, the fascination for the real story is something that has never left me since then. Awesome stream as always!

When Don and Ken went on for about 20 mins about the survivors, god I love hearing those stories!

A few years ago, one of the scientists who studied the Titanic gave a lecture at our local library. He brought a rivet and the frame of a porthole that we were able to hold and touch. I will never forget that experience.

I didn’t know this was a tradition each year. What a bittersweet and tender thing to do to honor that very tragic evening. Thank you so much. ☮️

Another fantastic live stream, this is my 3rd. Been following Ken and Don's career since the 90's, and Titanic since high school, way too far back to admit:-). Look forward to many more in the years to come, such a great way to educate and inspire all who are interested in maritime history! Thank you to each of you for your hard work and dedication, and a special thank for the extraordinary memories of Eva Hart and Edwina Troutt.

To the discussion about museum and archive employees not necessarily knowing what they have, as a museum employee who is constantly combing through our records to digitize things this 100% true. I’m a single part time employee recataloging and digitizing all of our photographs and it’s going to take me a year at minimum and a number of photographs are unidentified. We love when specialists can identify things for us and/or correct our understanding of an object. I think some people don’t realize just how much is often in collections. I work at a teeny little town historical society and just in our photograph collection I’d estimate we have at least 10,000 photographs, minimum. Just in our on site storage it’s probably closer to 30-50,000 objects. It’s very easy, even in a well organized archive, for things to be forgotten about due to sheer volume.

One awesome thing Walter Lord mentions in "The Night Lives On" about Ballard's expedition is that when one of his submersibles brought part of a cable to his research ship he thought it was undoubtedly from the Titanic but in order to avoid any gold rush on his ship he threw it back into the ocean. That I think was most appropriate on part of Ballard It is indicative of his deference to the wreck.

Given a very nightly time of the start of the live broadcast for me ( 3:30 am, i had to sleep lol), i am watching it relive now. I know some of the speakers from ET and FB Titanic pages, especially Kent, Tad, and Mark. And Don is too modest imho. And always a pleasure to hear from Ken, who is a legendary " Titanicholic" in every sense. Amazing. If a lecture of you guys at college lasted THAT long, I don't think your listeners would fall asleep of boredom at all. Kudos ! #113thanniversary

3:28:23 Watching back and loving Ken and Don's recollections of their interactions with survivors who are gone now. This story is about the people at least as much as it is about the ship.

I have been watching the live stream during or the day after since 2016. Thank you all for what you do. In a world shifting towards short form video content, it is very refreshing.
