I don't think we've ever felt so much emotion and pride seeing the fruits of our own land! We went to the mountains to visit our coffee farm and show you the corner where our project is planted and the breathtaking beauty of a rural community full of visionary young people who are betting on agritourism to transform their town, El Palero de Santiago Rodríguez. A journey filled with agricultural contrasts, difficult agronomic decisions, the magic of the forest, and the historic moment of our first harvest.

We began by exploring the community surrounding the farm, learning about the drive of young local entrepreneurs who are working to transform their mountain trails and agricultural traditions into a hub for sustainable community tourism. We walked through landscapes where the Dominican pine embraces the tropical rainforest, demonstrating the enormous ecotourism potential of our mountain range when young people decide to stay and create value in their territory.

We continued venturing deeper into the farm to confront the unfiltered reality of the field: we inspected a plot where the three-year-old Lempira coffee crop hadn't developed as expected. We analyzed the determining factors on-site, such as sun exposure, soil drainage, shade management, and vegetative problems that led to low yields, gaining insight into the errors and technical challenges faced by any small producer when starting a shade-grown coffee plantation.

To conclude on a high note, we crossed to the upper part of the farm where the landscape changed completely: vigorous, healthy plants laden with branches overflowing with green cherries and scarlet-red beans. There, we carried out our first coffee harvest by hand, learning to identify the optimal point of cherry ripeness, tasting the sweet mucilage freshly cut from the tree, and celebrating the first tangible fruits of years of effort and work in the land.

A decisive step on our agricultural journey that demonstrates that the Dominican countryside faces enormous challenges, but also the unparalleled reward of seeing your own harvest grow from scratch!
