The coldest river in the Dominican Republic? Welcome to one of Andariego's most extreme and untamed adventures.
Today we travel to the border between Monseñor Nouel (Bonao) and La Vega (Constanza) to discover the impressive Caña Amarga River. A jewel of community ecotourism where water temperatures defy everything you know about the Caribbean, reaching a shocking 10°C (50°F).
To achieve this feat, we first stopped at La Flaca Restaurant in the Los Quemados sector of Bonao to recharge with the best traditional mountain cuisine. Then, we stayed in the beautiful cabins of the Río Blanco Ecotourism Complex, an exemplary project managed by the Federation of Farmers that directly supports the local community.
Guided by the experts at Lynx Ecotourism, we embarked on an intense hike through the mountain range, which led us to cross an impressive 3-meter-wide water catchment tunnel, carved into the living rock. This tunnel serves as a portal to a hidden canyon. Upon exiting, we found a small waterfall and a pool of crystal-clear water surrounded by a dense Dominican tropical rainforest. The result? The most refreshing and invigorating dip of our lives.
