If it is a 1973 ( some serial sites give it as 1972) then the only serial number would be the one on the neck plate not on front head stock. Head stoke serials seem to start at 1978.?

In 73, wouldn't the serial number have been on the neck plate only? I have a 72 and there's no serial number on the headstock.

Do the old pickups have a sticker or marking that says 3BR? I picked up an old Duff McKagan style bass at a yard sale and the pickups : both P and J' sets are marked like this. The pots are dime sized. and not marked. The headstock has a 2001 Squier serial (made in indonesia) number.
The neck has a very nice rosewood (I think!) fretboard with nice smooth frets and a "Skunk stripe" on the rear.
My question is: are the pickups worth saving? Or should I hunt down better quality. PS: the instrument has no pickguard and a red metallic finish.
