Being good at what you do doesn’t automatically mean people will recommend you.
In this episode of Visibility with Purpose, LinkedIn and AI visibility specialist Lynnaire Johnston and global online networking and visibility strategist Sigrid de Kaste explore why some experts are readily recommended while others remain largely invisible.
A genuine recommendation carries more weight than simply passing on someone’s name. When we recommend a person we’ve worked with, our own reputation becomes part of that recommendation. That means expertise matters – but so do relationships, trust, experience and evidence of what someone can actually deliver.
Lynnaire and Sigrid discuss why getting to know people remains important, why recommendations from different people can produce very different experiences, and why it still makes sense to do your own due diligence before deciding to work with someone.
They also explore a newer dimension: AI recommendations. As more people use AI tools to identify experts, advisers and service providers, being visible and clearly positioned across LinkedIn, your website and other relevant online sources becomes increasingly important.
In this episode:
• Why expertise alone doesn’t guarantee recommendations
• The difference between referring someone and genuinely recommending them
• Why recommending someone can put your own reputation on the line
• The role relationships play in generating referrals
• Why visibility and accessibility matter
• How AI is becoming another source of professional recommendations
• Why your wider online presence matters for AI discoverability
• The value of detailed LinkedIn recommendations as social proof
If you want to be recommended more often, the starting point isn’t asking for more referrals. It’s making sure people – and increasingly AI – have enough evidence to understand who you are, what you do and why you’re credible.
