Only Londoners’ fear of giving offense, or natural English inhibition, prevents them from speaking to strangers on the Tube. They actually welcome the novelty of a tourist speaking to them. One businessman man I spoke to who was wearing a suit and tie, responded warmly telling me I was the first person who had ever spoken to him on the tube which he had been daily travelling on to work for many years
