British flirting is subtle and indirect... and consequently often completely missed! Here’s how Brits actually show interest.

If you’ve ever wondered whether a British person was flirting with you, or just being polite, you’re not alone. In this video, I explain how Brits flirt without being obvious, why learners often miss the signals, and how British culture values understatement and quiet consistency over direct compliments.

A quick note on the Italy example at the start: I was describing the cultural contrast I noticed while living there, not suggesting that shouting compliments in the street is appropriate behaviour. The point of the video is how much more subtle British flirting tends to be.

It's not a completely terrible video is it? It was actually ok to watch.

Hell, even as a Brit we're not sure whether another Brit has flirted with us!

As a British man I’ve never had any problems realising when a woman was flirting with me - but unfortunately it always comes as a “hang on a minute” revelation when remembering events 12 years later while quietly walking the dog.

When I was 12, at middle school, in the 1980s, I didn't know how to tell this girl in my class that I liked her. She was into horses so I put a small model horse on her desk. She came back and asked if I'd put it there. I said I'd accidentally dropped it but she could have it if she wanted it. A couple of days later she asked me if I liked her and I just nodded. We didn't quite know what to do next and we went off to different high schools, and lost touch, so nothing came of it, but I still have fond memories of her. I suppose that was a very British way of flirting.

I live in UK for 18 years and I just found out that I have been flirted to several times and have never recognised it. 😳 🤣🤣🤣

In the UK yelling at women down the street is very firmly classed as harassment

I'm married to an Englishman and I've never seen such an accurate representation of them! Being a Latina, it has been really difficult to work around it, but I've learned to find it endearing.

You should talk to some British builders... 😅

Spaniard living in the uk finding British men hell to date. I have this guy at work who has been telling me "you look great today" for two years in a row and after listening to this video I think he likes me. Any Spanish man would have asked me out for a beer on day two and not spend two years telling me " i look great for two years in a row. The problem is when you ask these English men out they panic a bit because you're too straight forward. I need to master " the art of sublety" more.

My wife and I have been married for about 35 years and we’re still waiting to be introduced. As for those three children, they’ve not even said hello yet. How frightfully rude.

When I first went out for a casual coffee with my now husband, he said "I like you." To which I enthusiastically responded: "Oh thanks, I like you too!" Being Polish, I translated like as like, nothing more. Poor hubby later told me, that when we first met, I kept giving him mixed signals. 😂😂😂

I compliment someone I like by completley avoiding them and delaying texting them for days on end.

British culture is one of the most difficult to decode. Full of complex social rules that don't align with common sense much. That's why videos like this one are so useful. Thanks

I`m from the UK and I had to watch this to understand!

I'm French and back at uni, I had this huge crush on this Brit and I FELT that he really liked me back but he was also teasing a lot (sometimes i found it close to insulting), so I never really acted on it. All of our friends were like "the crush and the tension is obvious to the entire world!". THREE YEARS later, we were texting and he finally told me "you know, back then, I actually liked you". lol.

Well, as an Italian girl in the UK I find it very confusing this flirting etiquette. I am used to direct courtship, in Italy you know when a man fancies you, but here I never know if someone is just trying to be fun/polite or if there is something else going on under the surface. And this is very annoying and time consuming.

Im spanish and I really find it too complex and even strategic, fear to be open and vulnerable with the person you have in front of you, to be terrified of rejection, so easy to back up if you not keep seeing the signals. This flirting language it really is much harder to learn from me that English 😅

Yes, it it true, that in Italy men prefer to flirt directly. They invite you to a restaurant, buy you gifts, even if you do not intend to be involved in any relationship with them. I am Russian lady who married her English husband 22 years ago. I was 40 and I moved to Wales with my 10 y.o. daughter. You can believe or not but local men were flirting with me in the streets, they said to me compliments, they even got interested in my marital status. The wanted to give me a lift. I even asked my husband, if it was normal in Britain to behave like that, he said: "no!". Maybe Wales is a little bit different. Anyway I had a lot of fun first few years.😂
