I feel like we're confusing a "low maintenance friends" with acquaintances

“Don’t be a low maintenance friend and expect high maintenance treatment”

All I have to say is, people SEVERELY overuse the word "Friend".
Sometimes you simply have people that you're "Cool with". But labeling them a "Friend" is doing too much.

I feel like ppl prioritize who they want to prioritize. Ppl be on their phones all the time but you can’t check in on your friends ?
Also these girls saying this wouldn’t treat their boyfriends like this but yet they treat their friends so poorly

The problem
Is a lot women use their friends as place holders till they get a man.

I feel like we’re getting too old to be having these “low-maintenance friends”. It’s either we got a friendship or an acquaintanceships. It can’t be both

After we stop talking for a certain amount of time, we are no longer friends. I can’t deal with wishy washy behavior and inconsistencies. I give wayy too much grace to ppl.

I believe with friendships you really have to find someone who's compatible with your friendship style. I've wasted plenty time and energy in people who are the, "I'll text you back every year... Unless I'm going thru a hard time. NOW, I need your consistent support."

I hope all the low maintenance friends can find other low maintenance friends, and the same for high maintenance friends. It'll save a ton of frustration.

I feel like there's a lot of nuance to this conversation because of personality differences and everyone being in different places in life. For me personally, I'm already introverted and my work schedule is intense right now. I don't want a friend that's talking to me every day and calling me at 2 am... I don't have the energy for it. But I also don't want a friend that doesn't speak to me for 6+ months. There has to be some effort at least, but anyone that wants to talk very frequently and thinks we aren't friends if we don't isn't for me

Friends pull away from me, not when they’re going through something, but when I’M going through something. When they’re going through everything they come to me and they have all day to talk on the phone and cry while they’re on a break in their car at work. But when I have something going on? They evaporate. Evaporate. People “check on me” after I let them know that that hurts, give them chances. Then they come back to “check on me” but really it’s because they’re going through something. 6 months later. Hello? You aren’t checking on ME you’re just missing my love because you’re struggling and you abandoned everyone else you tried to replace me with.

I was the friend who saved birthdays in my calendar, stayed up to talk my friends through difficult situations, planned surprise birthdays and parties for them, prayed with and for them in every season, remembered important milestones and celebrated them, etc.

Now my turn 😂😂 one year, 90% of those friends forgot my birthday. You can use your phone to do all kinds of things but you can’t add your friend’s birthday to your calendar or their contact page? OKAY.

When I went through my down seasons, they ALL ghosted. Suddenly I was hearing “they weren’t really your friends” - deflection at its finest. They weren’t really my friends but they were calling me to share deep and personal struggles and fears? I met their families and broke bread with them in their homes. OKAY.

I gracefully exited their lives last year and I only maintain relationships with respectful people who practice reciprocity.

I don’t do friendship groups or circles anymore.

Stop treating your friend like an acquaintance when they need a listening ear or compassion but when you need them, you treat them like your best friend. It’s fake and disrespectful.

a low maintenance friendship is literally an acquaintance. Someone can become an entirely different person in 6+ months. They could undergo a life changing event. To think that you can go that long period of time without talking to someone and expect them to be the same person from 6+ months ago is wild. The expectation is not to talk every day. Maybe not even once a week. But why is it normalized to not nurture a friendship like you're supposed to nurture every other relationship. Reaching out at least once at some point to say "hey I hope you're alright" or "hey im going through a lot and might not be as responsive" shows that you at least give af. Friendship is supposed to be based on reciprocity. Let's just call it what it is and say you want an acquaintance. That's totally fine. But using "low maintenance" to refer to a friendship of convenience is crazy to me

It reminds me of having school friends and outside friends

Yeah, a 20-year friendship ended after the last 7 years was like this. Not being there for me when my father died was the last straw.

I feel this to my core, said friends have so much time for their BF but none for their girlfriends. I had considered myself a "low maintenance friend", but like even as an introvert I felt like there was a fine line. When less contact started to look like no contact. Just not making any time or contact to your friend for 6-8+ months is just crazy. How can you even call it a friendship?

Lol listen I’m a full time nail technician & a full time nursing assistant! Let me add that I work 12 hour shifts and Sundays are my literal ONLY free days! However, I never make excuses to not show up for those that I love  ! I still have my phone 24/7 and still will text back and make time for who I want!  No one is too busy, trust me ! People prioritize their romantic relationships only and they don’t realize that platonic relationships are just as valuable !  Smh

I feel like if you truly like and value someone, you’ll like to be around them. Like I couldn’t imagine going months and months without talking to my friends. Yes we’re busy and I’m understanding to that but 6 months and above is excessive. I feel like people just don’t like their “friends”

Also with the rise of loneliness and overall friendlessness that gen-z is constantly complaining about, we need to rethink this idea of being excessively individualistic. How can you build community but not interact with people?

I’m sensing this video is not for the neurodivergent community, but social cues and reading in between the lines aren’t strong suits of mine so who knows.. anyways friendships without expectation of constant communication but sustained closeness and platonic intimacy regardless of frequency of communication are beautiful things. What’s a “good friend” changes person to person and not every relationship is meant to be the same as the next. Love that some people feel empowered with their opinions, but remind yourself not to project how you feel onto others because people do be different and need different things🤙

This… and then the prioritization of romantic relationships over friendships is also a discussion to be had because why can’t we see BOTH as important connections?
