I'm not sure 5 passive aggressive comments about Zach Cregger's resident evil in the first minute is enough, and they should be regular aggressive, 😂😂
The two zombies outside the pub that look alike are references to Spaced! They're supposed to be Bilbo (played by Bill Bailey) who runs the comic store, and his rival store owner who looks remarkably like him. There's also a zombie on a bright yellow hat, who is Tyres the raver. There's loads of other jokes from and references to Spaced throughout the film.
One of Yvonne's group is Matt Lucas.
The shot of them acting as zombies was originally going to be the last shot of the trailer, to make us think they wouldn't make it, but they decided against it. I loved the marketing for this film - the "Rom Zom Com" tagline tells you everything you need to know.
My discrepancy would be: Shaun of the Dead is a full-blown surrealist comedy. The stakes aren't real (even if the characters feel endearing). Just look at the title. SotD knows what it is. A comedy first, and a zombie film second. Resident evil, however, is attempting to be mostly grounded. It's a horror film. The comedy is a secondary attribute.
Shaun of the Dead is a classic. But that doesn't mean RE is utter trash.
The first act especially is VERY compelling. The hospital receptionist, the cop, and a few other early characters are believable and lead to compelling, earned humor.
It's only half way through, we get to Umbrella. EVERYONE at Umbrella is a dumb gag. They feel like they're part of a contrived sketch. This is where the film goes off the rails. They don't have a defined identity other than the joke they're about to become.
At any rate, RE is a perfectly serviceable film. It's not trash. Again, the first act is really good. But the movie is certainly not Shaun of the Dead levels of greatness.
