Shaukat Hussain Rizvi, the first husband of Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan, was one of the pioneering figures of Pakistani cinema. He established the legendary Shahnoor Studio in Lahore and produced numerous films, introducing several talented artists to the industry. Among his greatest discoveries was Noor Jehan herself, who later became an iconic figure in South Asian music and film.
In 1958, Rizvi released the film Jan-e-Bahar, which gained historical significance due to a remarkable dance performance by Neelo Begum. For this film, Neelo performed a mujra (classical dance), often considered an early form of an item song in cinema. To prepare for this performance, she underwent two months of intensive training in Kathak and Bharatanatyam under the renowned dance master Ashiq Hussain Samrat.
before the film’s official release, Neelo’s dance became extraordinarily popular. Influential figures from cities like Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Rawalpindi visited Shahnoor Studio just to witness this performance. It was also showcased to foreign dignitaries visiting Pakistan, where Neelo performed live, despite not yet being an established actress at the time.
This very dance played a crucial role in shaping her career and helped her rise to fame as a leading actress.
In this video on the Inqalabi Channel, we present rare glimpses of this historic performance. The inqalabi channel is dedicated to uncovering untold stories from the lives of legendary artists from Pakistan and India, offering fans a deeper insight into their struggles, journeys, and achievements.
