On a real note, Japanese Eggplants are actually a different cultivar. They are longer, sweeter, milder and has less seeds. Some recipes specifically call for Japanese Eggplants because it is distinct from Italian Eggplants. US commonly sell globe eggplants that are much larger and rounder, which are more suitable for Italian cuisine.
