I think that even more importantly than the religious discussion this song provokes is watching Paz doing the hair thing.

She was paralyzed for roughly 10000 days, or a little over 27 years. Check out the songs “Wings For Marie (Part One)” and “10000 Days (Wings Part 2)” by Tool. He is in a different place in those songs, as they were written years after “Judith”. I won’t spoil anything else about the songs. Other than they’re deeply moving, and must be played together as one song.

I find it so interesting that most Atheists are worried about offending those who believe, yet I have had many of believers not worried about offending my choice to not believe. I have been called evil. I have been condemned to a hell that I don't believe in. I have been lectured about being lost and needing to be saved. For me, this song is perfect.

Maynard went through a cycle while processing his mom's illness, her continued faith and how he viewed her treatment by her church.

Others have mentioned parts, but she became paralyzed when he was 11 and remained so until her death about 30 years(10,000 days) later. He spoke about her congregation had a view that if bad things happened, you must have done something bad, so they gossiped about her but she kept faith.

My dad died when I was a kid. I was 12, and my sisters were nine and seven. He was only 35. It was his second heart attack. When it happened, people told me things like, "He's in Heaven," He's with Jesus," etc. I found that comforting for a while, since my parents raised me as a believer. But all this eventually caused my 12-year-old brain to start wondering if 'God' created Heaven and Earth all alone, what could he possibly be doing now, where he's so desperate for help that he feels justified to take a father away from his 12, 9, and 7-year-old kids for help. Eventually, this caused me to swear off religion as a whole, and I've personally wanted nothing to do with it since.
Of course I don't criticize friends, family, or anyone else for believing whatever they believe. They're entitled to that. I even went to my niece's baptism about a month ago.

My personal philosophy: If religion helps make you a better person, have at. If religion gives you an excuse or shield to hide behind while you engage in hypocritical or despicable actions, then it's a problem.

Okay, putting aside this kick ass song for a second, as an atheist, I find it so refreshing to find a creator who is open to discussing their atheism and not trying to hide their lack of belief as something shameful. You're right, its extremely hypocritical that Christians believe they have the right to preach to others and try to convert them but then get extremely defensive and offended if someone questions or challenges their beliefs. I grew up in a very Christian family and questioned religion my entire life, though I tried desperately to make myself believe. I remember the exact moment when my questioning broke a dam within me and I officially accepted that i do not believe ... the question popped into my head "would I still be a Christian if I was born in India to Hindu parents, or would I also be a Hindu? Would I believe in Hinduism as strongly as Christians believe in Christianity?" And thats when I realized it was all just indoctrination. We believe not because the belief is genuine, but because we have been raised to believe. And of course from there, I spiraled and started questioning EVERYTHING! All my questions led me to one conclusion: I do not believe in God or any God. Religion does not provide answers and more often than not, it conflicts with our actual understanding of the world.

Maynard does not hold back on this one.  It hits on many levels.
That said, it's a great song.

This is my first time watching a video of yours and wow, just wow.

I think it's amazing how much of yourself you put out there in this analysis. It is clear, you have thought a lot about your relationship with religion and how strongly it has impacted you and your mental health. Hearing you not just tackle the subject matter, but to do it so eloquently through your words and externalized thoughts is so beautiful it evokes tears. I cannot imagine how much suffering, turmoil, and sadness you have gone through. I hope you find fulfillment and a sense of catharsis when you make these videos. The words you speak are powerful and worth sharing as they may help many who are at odds with themselves to find solace. I sincerely hope you are proud of yourself.

I can listen to this actual reaction right now I’m in way too dark a place right now, I too am an atheist, and that’s really rough right now, I had a similar form of stroke a hemorrhagic stroke as Maynard’s mom Judith had (I’m fairly certain hers was this kind). I’ve since struggled with vision, hearing, balance and facial pain. For the past 10 years my brother bill has been my rock, my caregiver. He’s always been my best friend, he’s my twin and we were inseparable. Wednesday morning he told me he was having a massive headache(he had lesser ones ongoing but he’d seen a doctor and was scheduled to go to get a ct scan 2 hours after this), he said he didn’t feel well, I tried to help him upstairs he collapsed and started snoring and gargling out of his mouth. While I was in the line with 911 he fell over further I saw him lying on the ground almost reaching for his neck, he stopped breathing a couple times. Several hours later and transfer to a hospital that handles this they told us all signs point towards complete brain death, I stayed in his room as much as I could alternating with my mom holding his hand and talking to him in case he could hear us and there was some brain function in there, sadly the next day and multiple confirmations where you get bad news repeated over and over and over we lost him, hope was gone, I’ll miss him forever. I don’t know why I’m going to do my friends say they will support me but I think they underestimate everything he did for me. RIP Bill:

I wrote thjs at 430 am the morning after he collapsed to honor him

I was always asked what it feels like to be a twin I never knew because I was never not one, I feel I now know, it’s being born with a life partner who understands you, loves you unconditionally, is similar but not the same as you but those differences complement each other. It’s having someone who knows without saying, it having someone you have your own language with. It’s a best friend times 10. Being a twin is special.
