Hearing Black for the first time turned into more than just hearing a classic rock song. It felt like experiencing heartbreak, grief, nostalgia and acceptance all at once. Definitely one that stays with you after it ends.

I feel like I have so many emotions to process after hearing this! What came up most for you?

‘’I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star in someone else’s sky but why can’t it be mine?” Is the most devastating line I’ve ever heard.

I have been listening to this song for 30 years and STILL get chills listening to the pain in Eddie's voice

most of the grunge was psychologically deeper on most subjects. that's a big part of the reason that people were drawn to it when it developed as a scene, and an era of music.

Eddie sings this with so much feeling it is so easy to feel his pain.

“All the love gone bad, turned my world to black, tattooed all I see, all that I am, all that I’ll be”. Speaks to profound sense of loss and anyone who has experienced this, recognizes and relates to this.

Saw Pearl Jam on the Yield tour at Barrie, Ontario in 1998. Eddie kicked a football into the crowd and I ended up with it. Coolest thing that's ever happened to me in my 30 years of going to concerts. I dubbed the football "The Vedder Ball" and I still have it to this day.

The best live performance by anyone ever for me. Amazing...

I heard this the next morning at work after the end of a years long relationship and near marriage. I burst into tears and couldn't hold it back. I still have a difficult time listening to this and it has been years. Beautifully written and brilliantly expressed emotionally. Well done Eddie.

She just broke that song down psychologically in a great way. She's very perceptive.

I think you have one of the best evaluations of this song that I have heard.

This performance is epic, and haunting, and full of pure emotion. It really hits home when you've lost that "love of your life". And now you're scarred and everything is tattooed black. Its painful and depressing and you don't know if your life will ever be the same again. It is a pure heartbreak song

He's not performing, he's remembering.

I get teared up every time I watch this performance. Absolutely incredible.

He sings this with so much emotion 😭

I read an interview with Eddie Vedder where he talked about not really glad this song became a hit. It was such a personal thing for it would mess him up when he heard it walking around the grocery store or blaring from a car.

The fact he wanted to keep this song private shows how much he feels these emotions

Eddie said that it hurts every time he performs this song, even today. This song was personified by someone in my life for 24 years. The random chances of the world brought us back into each other's lives and I found 20 seconds of insane courage to tell her how I feel. We worked through some problems and now she's the star in MY sky.

As a 67 year old man that has deep and powerful emotions songs like this are essential to my letting go, and moving on! To me, this is music and performance at its finest. No other art form, or expression of any kind can reveal so much in such a sort period of time. Is there any other song where a singer is as vulnerable as this? I don’t know of any. Eddie lays his soul for everyone to see so he can heal! Bravado!
