What NEW TOMORROWLAND is and is NOT

A month ago I DARED Disney to prove that the concept art in front of Tomorrowland was still relevant. They called my dare (sort of).

The dust has settled on the NEW TOMORROWLAND announcement made at D23 this year. Let's now focus on what it is, and what it is not.
This conversation WILL INCLUDE:

Tron
People Mover
Refurb vs. Total Demo
Space Mountain
Nemo Lagoon and Autopia

plus a surprise conversation about the Mattehorn.

Oh, I'm watching.

I'm always watching.

David, you are SO spot-on about the oddness of the statement of “more open spaces”. I told my wife exactly they. They are preparing us for something…. I fear they are preparing us for something we won’t like….

I would love a reskin of Star Tours into Muppets: Pigs in Space. We need more Muppets!

A "phased update" are conditions forced on Imagineering by operations. Operations DOES NOT want large sections of T'land to be walled off for months or years. In fact, this (along with the expense) is exactly why T'land has not been updated in so long. A plan has finally been presented and approved that allows for a much needed update but keeps most of the land open during the phased construction.

"Save the Clocktower!"(Peoplemover!!!!!!)

The open space I want is to move Astro Orbiter back to where it belongs. That would open up the entry to Tomorrowland. Traffic is so bad there and gets even worse during fireworks and parades.

@SilverStarGazer 3 weeks ago

I wouldn’t exactly call that graphic “concept art.”

@RandomActsOfFrank 3 weeks ago

Maybe by open space they mean “opening more spaces” such as the old starcade and theater

Being involved in the construction industry, you're missing a big piece of information on the Matterhorn. When you design a footing, there are 2 general ways to design footings, make them bigger (ie spread footing) or make them deeper (Pylons). IMO, Matterhorn can be redone, using pylon footings, with ride interior and a skin facade. The soils in Anaheim are generally favorable, and any liquefaction potential doesn't typically exist. It might take some modern material for the facade, but i believe it is doable in its current footprint. Edited to add, awesome video btw, look forward to seeing what the imagineers and Josh D'Amaro have in store for us.

The new Space Mountain, "Earthrise", is being built in Tokyo Disneyland

The problem is:

The Disneyland Peoplemover had an hourly capacity of about 4,600 to 4,885 guests

The hourly capacity of Autopia at Disneyland is estimated to be around 2,000 to 3,000 guests per hour under optimal conditions, though operational estimates vary.

21:22 I'm hoping more Open Spaces means more rides that are outside rather than in buildings.

@srayj 3 weeks ago

As soon as he said the part about open spaces, I felt like that was an absolute dog whistle to say they’re removing the people mover.

@score_addict 3 weeks ago

remember how Alice had that refurb where catwalks had to be added in the outdoor section for a proper evacuation route because of updated codes? Idk, but I would guess the Peoplemover probably runs into that same problem if they were hypothetically to bring it back

@rck1322 3 weeks ago

Brickey said that the space that Autopia takes up is the about the same sq ft as toontown. We could have a Runaway Railway size ride plus 3 other small rides, shops and food for the cost of Autopia/Subs.

@shansangr 3 weeks ago

More open spaces could be the Tomorrowland theater. It used to be an open air theater.

@BonkeyMucket 3 weeks ago

I still remember the last Tomorrowland reworking back in the 90s and how exciting they were telling us how great that was going to be. That Pizza place and the theater area next to it needs something there. I just hope they put in more shade
