This is Rlaarlo’s BIG entry into the competitive 1/8 scale RC buggy world… and honestly guys after building it?
👉 I’m more confused than ever.
The RC community has been crying out for a true 1/8 race platform from Rlaarlo for a long time, and on paper the Dragon Scale Knight (DSK) looks INCREDIBLE:
🏁 7075-T6 aluminum chassis
🏁 Carbon fiber components
🏁 Big bore shocks
🏁 3 gear diffs
🏁 Race buggy geometry
🏁 Premium race-inspired layout
But here’s the thing…
👉 Is this REALLY a proper race buggy?
👉 Or is it another basher wrapped in race buggy marketing? 👀
I genuinely wanted to make this video differently from most RC reviews online. I didn’t want to just throw hype at the camera and tell you everything is perfect.
So I took my time.
I built the buggy fully.
I studied the layout.
I looked at the suspension geometry.
I checked the drivetrain.
I evaluated the shocks.
I tested the build quality.
And honestly… the experience left me with mixed feelings 😅
⚠️ THIS BUILD WAS NOT PLAIN SAILING.
During the build I ran into multiple issues that I think potential buyers NEED to know about before spending their money:
❌ Instruction manual problems
❌ Shock assembly frustrations
❌ Chassis layout concerns
❌ Weight distribution questions
❌ Build inconsistencies
❌ Race-focused design choices that left me scratching my head
Now don’t get me wrong…
There IS potential here 👀🔥
Some areas of this buggy genuinely impressed me and there are moments where you can absolutely see what Rlaarlo were aiming for.
But whether they actually achieved it?
👉 That’s the BIG question.
This video is a FULL in-depth kit build and honest first impression review from the perspective of somebody actively involved in RC racing and race buggy setup.
No fluff.
No fanboy hype.

IMO Rlaarlo should have gone soley for a basher RTR first, got that right out of the box, then maybe look at developing a racer further down the line. Also feel they need ro get more testing/Advice before releasing to the General public.

It’s a really good buggy though and I’m going to push it to 120mph and beyond
Excellent beginners and bashers buggy, with yet to be determined track potential.
Seems it needs a slightly different "kit" for racing by the look of it (ie, shorter race springs), although running it will be the acid test. Maybe the center diff needs a slightly further back mounting? It will be interesting to see if the front top plate is a weak point on the track as it appears to be for bashing. There is an ally one available, but I have not seen anyone use that yet. I wonder if Rlaarlo are considering a Rx box that fits to a single rear support bracket as well as that appears to be the best location for front or rear motor mounting for the Rx box? Some of these are simple to address, some (ie, center diff position) are not.
Overall Rlaarlo 👏👏👏, Chris with a c, 👏👏👏. It will be very interesting to see how you and it gets on at the track with the current set up options. Will they hold it back?
Rlaarlo HAVE landed.
Personally, I would think Hobbywing motor / esc combo, if / when there are better saddle pack set up options. The small issues with large consequences, especially affecting electrics set up, probably means I will hold back for the Mk2 version.
It will also be a very interesting test of Rlaarlo and how the company handles the constructive criticisms you have raised of the generally very high quality, very high engineering, very good modern design and therefore overall very, very good DSK.
I got the kit like you, but I decided not to use the upgraded parts yet, mainly cause it was unclear when I got it if it would be included in production kits please like you, there was some confusion on it.
I havent built kits like you before I was just happy this included instructions unlike my kkpit.
Its too bad you couldnt use the electronics they sent, but the kit doesn't come with the electronics probably for good reason. I dont know much about racing, hoping to get into it one day, but I believe this falls in the typhon tlr category. Use it for bashing, if you start racing you can start with this, but it seems if you start getting professional level, this isnt it yet. But I really like this buggy! It has bashed well for me and I haven't broken anything but a battery strap and bent read center cvd. I do wish they had of gotten our input more with it before they released it. I definitely had some suggestions for them. Dont be mad if I use the paint idea on a car of mine in the future! 😂😂😂 Nice review!👍🏾
1.The 160A sensored brushless ESC can be tuned using the same programming card as our S10. It is not compatible with the Vircas app. Currently, the Vircas app only supports the ESCs on our 1/7 scale crawlers.
2.Thank you for your feedback regarding the dual battery compartment and motor/ESC placement. This is highly valuable. We will forward this to our product department for follow-up. You are also welcome to contact Annie; it would be highly appreciated if you could provide the dimensions of the racing batteries you are currently using.
3.Regarding the ESC delay, the sensored system can be adjusted via our programming card, whereas the RTR version cannot. The engineering team retained this throttle delay on the sensorless brushless ESC for the RTR version as a deliberate trade-off. The primary purpose is to prevent beginners from losing control and crashing.
4.Regarding the default setup of the buggy, thank you for your input. We have received similar feedback from several testing Dragon Knights. Moving forward, we will have our engineers provide default setup guidelines based on actual racing tests.
5.Regarding the vehicle stance and spring issues you mentioned, we have recorded this situation. In the future, we will consider providing springs that better adapt to this or offering more tuning space. According to current product team feedback, we have already begun tooling for ultra-soft springs.

The ESC having a Bluetooth app with no android support stinks. (The android app link takes you to a different website that wants your bank info)
The only other issue I had was with the front mounted motor, it caught my on/off switch and cut the wires. I just soldered the red and yellow together then shrink tube over it to protect it.
So therefore, I do wish they had some sort of protection cover for the motor/center diff
