What on earth is going on in the USA? Where does the poison in the political system come from? How did white-hot rage become the political operating temperature? In his lecture, Bernd Greiner will illuminate the history of a society that indulges in internal wars, fueled by a centrist extremism that has become the country's political metronome. The focus is not on presidents or parties, but on self-appointed guardians of the common good, citizens who, in the name of democracy, deny others democratic participation – with minimal tolerance for political dissent, with an uncompromising insistence on their own goals, and with a missionary zeal. They have broken the back of the labor movement, banished leftists from political life, marginalized critics of arms control and war, and cemented white dominance. Above all, the maxim reigns that true power is based on the fear of others. In other words: If Donald Trump were America's only problem, the country would have only a minor one.
Prof. em. Dr. Bernd Greiner
is the founding director of the Berlin Center for Cold War Studies – a project of the Institute for Contemporary History Munich-Berlin, the Federal Foundation for the Study of the SED Dictatorship, and Humboldt University of Berlin. His research focuses on the Cold War, the history of the USA, and civil-military relations in the 20th century. He is the author of numerous publications, most recently "The Cuban Missile Crisis" (2023), "Henry Kissinger" (2020), "Made in Washington" (2023), and "White Heat: The Internal Wars of the USA. A History from 1900 to the Present" (2025), which provides "fundamental insights into the mentality of 'Make America Great Again'" and is written in a style that is both "detailed and gripping."
