I came back to this after watching KoG's episode 2 premiere since this video really informed my experience of it. Ep 2 presents us with the question of what could've caused Gwen's code to break, and in the context of Gwen being a representation of a dream, I wonder at this point whether Olivia's numerous attempts to fix her was the cause itself. A dream has to be nurtured, and if you treat it like something to be abused, controlled, and ripped apart, of course it would break under that stress and resemble the brutality that shaped it. I suspect Gwen may not be "actively" broken, that rather this version is simply the natural outcome of how every iteration of her has continually been treated. I think her base program absorbed the violence shown to her by Olivia in much the same way that her body literally stole and integrated the prosthetic claw arm from the park officer who tried to kidnap her. She reflects how people treat her because that's the only way she can survive. It's an interesting way to look at Gwen and honestly makes me think about how I treat my own dreams and artistic spirit. Great video!

the part about gwen and orville being posed to look as if theyre being married, she bore him a legacy only to get nothing but a cage in return

I think that the message at the end is fucking phenomenal.
So many people ignore the many ways the world is being hurt, try to not look at the tragedies, the injustice, the evils of the world.
But you have to.
Cause like Andi says in the episode that just released:
“You can’t fix something if you refuse to see the problems.”

The umbilical cord, I viewed it as a person thrust into parenthood without knowing what being a parent is like. Her "child" is a parasite. Her "child" actually has the power over her, so she can't actually be a parent. She can't disagree. She can't discipline her "child." She jumped from the terrace after being pulled and bleeding all over. She saw the expectation to be a YES MAN to everything this sociopathic kid says and hadn't wanted it from the beginning. She was forced into parenthood. The way she is implied to try to escape for DECADES now, implys she had sapience from the very beginning. What is her brain? Is there a human conciousness trapped inside hidden by program? Whose brain is it?

Came from ep. 2 and oh boy, Princess Guinevere has been through some messed up stuff. Especially the way she was hyperventilating, Olivia definitely have been the cause of her trauma. Poor Gwen!

12:25 “You think a cog like me has power?”
Cogs don’t have power, but a KoG might…

As someone who went to college and got a degree to be an animator, I have to say thank you so much for speaking about the industry. Unfortunately, throught a lot of bad luck, my dream did not come true. I wish more was spoken about this. So many talented people dont get a chance to shine. Its rather disheartening how our capitalist culture puts failure as a moral and personal failure. And so many people dont talk about how much the job market, animation and otherwise, is built on knowing the right people and being in the right place.

YESSS!!! I’M SO GLAD TO SEE SOMEONE ELSE NOTICED THE MIDDLE FINGER DETAIL!! Also interesting to me that she’s now missing that middle finger in her current, disheveled state. I’m curious about how that significance translates over now🤔
Also wanna point out that Gwen also feels like a hybrid of Barbie and Disney Princesses wrapped into one character. She stars in everything, and can be anything (except “ugly”, imperfect, visibly queer, modest, masculine, fat, old, muscular, disabled, etc.)! She’s really more of an icon than a character. She’s not designed to go on one big, emotional journey that changes her forever. She resets to fit whatever franchise or mold people expect of her, while likely maintaining certain core character traits like youthfulness, kindness, naivete, compassion, gentleness, and a nurturing vibe. Very similar to how Barbie tends to be across her various movies and looks.
I also thought this was interesting to point out, because the current Gwen droid looks like a Barbie doll that a kid played way too rough with. Chopped her hair, messed up her eye and face, tore her arm out of its socket and lost it, the dog chewed up her foot so now she walks on her ankle joint, she has no clothes, and her synthetic skin is all messed up. Just really fascinating comparison. It feels like Dana’s primarily commentating on Disney stuff here, but Barbie as a cultural icon seems to be in the mix as well.

Fuck phenomenal. Perfect way to ask the question of: What does it mean to be 'this'. This, in the case, being a woman, of course, but really, it fits for a number of situations. The real problem is moreso about Identity, itself. 'Who am I'?

Just came back to this after watching epdiso 2, and the diaglog support your analysis 100%
- "She is acting more violent than she is programmed to be" - You are taught to dream, but not about revolution. Dream ab the shiny products they sell to your desire, or dream ab being shiny enough that people desire you, or dream ab being useful cog for the system, dont dream ab a bettr system than the current one
- "You cant fix the problem if you refuse to see the problem" - Yeah, pretty much a polite way to say wake the f*** up lol
- "This is just a symptom, we need to find the cause, (Gwen - or as you said she is the embodiment of "Dream") is dangerous until we figure it out -> "Dream" can become tool to cause harm and violence.
The show basically screams wake tf up but it understands the root cause is the system manipulating, repackaging and selling "Dream" as escapism.

People are led by dreams, but the dream here is a lie sold by the system (The movie told us The Park manufactures many versions of Gwen/Dream for sale but when stripped of their beautiful appearance the Gwen at the center is abused and molded into a monster).  In reality Gwen/dream is corrupted and people can convince thenselves they are pursuing something great and beautiful but we relly are just trying to cope at the cost of the planet, yourself and everyone else. Calling survival a dream makes it more bearable, and so people follow "their" dream to feel alive, even if the "dream" has always been mutilated by the system to squeeze money and energy out of you. The poor dreams what they are told to dream, to survive, or feel alive. They cant afford ethical, selfless and revolutary dream anw.

So with Gwens and the Park created, the system gets what it wants : overconsumption and people distracted or depressed enough they dont fight back. This keeps "The Park" running but ruins the world. Or even worse is the fact that people (like Frankie) still aspire to be a part of the system/"the Park" that ruin their life because they convince themselves it is the only way they can be useful or make a slight difference in this ugly world. Aka becoming a crownie (basically working for corporate job for unethical companies ='))))) to make more funny quirky products, romanticize the ugly reality we all live in while participating in making it uglier ;o; The end of epdiso 2 "After this job, we will all get out of this" No you wont honey =') you still work the job helping the elites getting richer and ruining the world and the world is still ruined

The distracted people help other people become distracted from reality. At the end, the dream "to consume and to conform" we are taught to have ending up hurting ourselves and others people. That's why Gwen becomes a mangled angry mess (with PTSD it seems), Frankie giving excuses for her abuser and thinking the man punching her in the face "likes" her, and Andi hates her job, herself, her life and probably copes with drug cuz her spit is blue and she knows the exact spot to find drugs. Even the villain of the shows dreams for total control over Gwen, and if Gwen stands for everyone's dream, then that's basically god complex - I guess that's on point for the elite running the park and creating AI servants to talk with for self validation.

The show subvert the concept of "Dream", making it not aspirational but delusional, misled, and selfish. None of the characters actually dream for what matters, like actual change. Frankie dreams to create better pretty distraction, Andi sadly has to dream for a job (the poor has to dream for basic neccessity). The villain dreams to maintain the status quos, or the past where their mother is alive (It's giving Make America great again BS). And the manifestation of human's dream aka the Park that sit on top of everything else - to expand/ dominate/ and consume ruins the world. And I think it's perfect for the current political and actual climate :) We are screwed if we keep dreaming, but reality is so shit that it feels like dreaming keeps us alive but people dont really dream for what matters.

Give them bread and circus - The bread is stale so people flock to the circus I guess

I get the feeling Franky will be the one to put an end to Gwen.

15:17 It feels messed up to have this kind of thinking. It’s exhausting to spend everyday convincing yourself and other people that you’re not being delusional or naive by holding onto a dream, you’re just trying to find some semblance of hope and happiness. This world is such a fucked up place, for some people,it would feel even more so without that dream, for some people a dream is the only thing keeping them here, that’s just how bleak life can get. I think that’s why for better or worse, I relate to Franky so much and so far view her as my favorite character.

Very deep, yet inspiring analysis! Nice work man.

For someone who doesn't like a lot of the body/appearance but not to en extreme or needs therapy extent this video about the cruel views of beauty and expectations hit rlly hard for me fr women shouldn't have a standard to follow they should be however they want all women men trans men/women and nonbinary people are beautiful and amazing in their own ways that's what makes us well us to all who read this: you are beautiful you are unique you are the best you you can be when u see n not what others want but. When u see you and only the. True you .wether it's as a man or a.  Women or as neither. Gender you are human you are beautiful you. Are special to many and you are loved. And may. You love you too❤❤❤😊❤

Thank you for feeding my inner theorist with this one. This show has so many great details to pick at, I feel you could rewatch every episode and still discover something new. The writers and artists on this show are cooking hard

Its REALLY funny that this came out like 3 hours before the second episode

7:36 A broken sword but a strong shield, a strong sword but a broken shield...

Wow!!!! I actually never thought of the side plot at all or any of this till I saw your video.   0.0 I am now amused. All the little things went over my head.

"Please don't kill me"  Nah, I'll kill you with kindness!

Seriously, this is a really neat video essay and I didn't even notice the posing like they are being married thing.  There's little details that I've caught that my partner hasn't in the show, like the emphasis on eyes and outlooks, along with yeah, the corruption of intentions and what a person has to do to protect themselves.  The fact you are being conscious and consulting multiple people for sensitivity's sake is also a good sign: people are not a monolith after all.  So yeah, thank you for the essay.

Wow. How, interesting video, dude. And I've Loved this show so much.
