your hints are always welcome! One of my favorites is not to consistently start huge projects. I find cross stitching much more fun if I can finish a project in a couple of weeks instead of a couple of years.

I get so excited to finish a project that I forget to “sign and date it”. I’d love to hear your ideas on how you do this.

I always sew a star on the top of my fabric

That "off by one" is a mistake I frequently make. Now I will count the blank columns and not the stitches! Thanks so much.

Thanks again Ford. The “shoulds” section made me smile… I get it 😂 My biggest mistake is continuing to stitch when I’m getting sleepy. I’ve had to frog the next day way too often, but I cannot learn 😂

I have a little trick I use to make sure I'm always in the right direction of my project so that if I put it down and pick up later, I know that's it is upright. I always put the screw part of my hoop at the top. This way I never turn my project upside down by mistake.

Mark top center of fabric with a stitch or pen.

I just had a great idea! Make a "this side up" needle minder!

My solution to "disorienting" my fabric (ask me how I know 😄) is to mark the upper left hand corner with thread at the same time I mark the center of my fabric with thread. This trick has saved my bacon on more than one occasion.

Love you're show!❤

The best "should" I have found is that I always enjoy my projects. If I don't enjoy it anymore, I put it aside - sometimes permanently!
I just kitted up a new "radical" project by one of my favorite designers. Excited to get started!

Thanks for all your help. I’m learning to cross stitch after a 20-30 yr pause. I Love it so I’ll just work harder. ❤

I make my worst counting mistakes when I'm tired. So I try to work tricky spots when I'm definitely alert and leave things like filling large areas for when I'm tired but still need a little stitching time. If it's a tricky spot to count, I bring out my counting pins so I can mark the intended next stitch but count again or even a third time if my attention is interrupted. I also check that the stitch lines up with other features in the stitching, e.g., does that one gold X line up with the blue one a few rows up.

On making sure that my fabric is correctly oriented, I first make sure which way is supposed to be which according to the pattern. Yes, I double check that. Then, if I'm not beginning to stitch immediately, I stitch an X on the top middle. Another way is to use a safety pin at the top margin middle; those are hard to ignore. If the pattern has a border, starting at the top middle is another way.

I don't usually get caught with the wrong count fabric but I sometimes like to change the count used because that's what I have. Then the challenge is to be sure you've done the math correctly so that what you have will indeed fit on the fabric you have. This might be a good topic for a video because it can be fun to change up the size but there are a few considerations involved. Or perhaps ways to expand a small motif into a larger project.

I make sure the screws on the hoop are at the top. This keeps my orientation right. I also have an app called 1 second a day. I take a picture of my finished projects then the app makes it a cute little video.

Great tips, especially counting columns

As for "shoulds", I have none because 90% of what I learned, I learned from you, so I soaked up that very healthy attitude along the way. Recently I’ve felt I was really getting on top of things then only today I made two errors that had to be frogged. I was so into my music I wasn’t paying enough attention. Fixing things consumes sooo much time, grrr. As always, thanks for the thought provoking video.

I've cross stitched for years & recognize the problems you mentioned. I always give a 3 inch margin on each side of a piece for easier mounting & framing (I often do large pieces such as growth charts). I also ALWAYS, in the margins, use a felt tip pen to mark T (top), B (bottom), L (left) & R (right). Really helps keep me keep the piece oriented properly.
