The video was NOT meant to be hateful towards the character designs I talk about in the video. It simply analyzes why they're popular and I provided slight criticism when it comes to drawing them. I even mentioned that I love these designs. They're fun! Even if they're hard to draw sometimes. There's nothing wrong with these types of OCs, and if you have these types of OCs, that's perfectly fine.

I didn't intend for the video to come off as bullying or to be reminiscent of those old DeviantArt cringe videos. That is the last thing I wanna be. I thought I was being fair, but a few comments have said otherwise. In general, the Toyhouse videos were meant to be a look at the community from a critical and goofy lens.

you made me realize that they're very similar to gacha character designs in terms of design philosophy, their main goal when they're in the process of designing the characters is profit, making them eye catching, adding a lot of details & making them complex for the sake of being complex,
are they nice to look at? most of the time yes! is it a pain in the ass to draw them even if they're just standing in a void? also yes lol
but i'd argue adoptable character designers are more willing to take risks when designing more than gacha companies do, since they don't have shareholders to satisfy so i prefer those designs over the gachas tbh

They're very harajuku and Gnarpy inspired OCs, I kinda dig it but some of the people that make them are just the meanest people you'll ever meet sometimes ngl

the thing is, when everyone make the same "unique" design
it's no longer "unique"

But yeah, I could never design a character with all the bells and whistles they have. 😅 I'm drab, basic, and minimal all the way through.

honestly I lowkey think that these kinds of OCs are really cute and I'd adopt/make them if I didn't have chronic fatigue and drawing them didn't take like 9 billion years off of my life. these character designs are on some genshin impact shit 😭😭😭

11:49 surprisingly enough, there's a lot of furries who have fursonas that are a combination of a land mammal (dog, cat)  and a water mammal (dolphin, whale) . Maybe that's why some Toyhouse OCs have that kind of tail. Sometimes, they just add stuff that doesn't make sense because it looks cool to them.

guilty of this fish tail thing,, i really love aquatic animals and i feel the need to turn everyone into fish or robtos (dare i say both) to satiate my gluttony. although i do try to make the tail make sense ffor the character. like if they have alot of wings ill makr thr tailfins wings to match yhr theme

i feel so old. im not in the art community anymore but any time i check back in i start to understand boomers.. i feel like back when i was still in the community this would be called "toyhouse adopt syndrome" and solar sands would be making a video about it

These ocs kinda blend into eachother for me, but i really like that people put in the effort of adding all these little details to their characters

"seen and not used" describes it so perfectly, these designs i see always look so 2d, i cant imagine them in any pose other than front facing. Also even tho the marker exploded i think it kinda fits the drawing! it reminds me of when you peel off barnacles from a boat and it leaves a spotty coral kinda look

Tbh every time I encounter an OC that inexplicably has a fish/shark tail with minimal to no other distinctly aquatic features in the wild, I just assume it's supposed to be some kind of hybrid creature. Maybe it's the furry bias doing unjustly charitable leg work, but I'm really used to "here's my fursona Gremlynn, they're a fox-cat-shark-ram with big kitty fangs" kind of characters. Really the least they could do to make random out of place fish/shark tails work better is just give the OC some kind of back fin. It's legitimately the same kind of shape as a pointy fang only a bit more rounded. Structurally it should be in line with what they were already drawing.

As a frequent user of TH and purchase/own adopts mentioned in the video, I've noticed a big pattern in the adopting community. Usually bigger artists will make the same design over and over and over again with little to no differences in style, species, color, etc and will sell them for hundreds of dollars. A lot of creators don't expand on what they make, they just stick to the same designs they like and don't grow, ever. It's just something small that bothers me but these creators can do what they want and if this pays rent then go at it!
I don't hate these designs at all too, do whatever the hell you want my guy, the world is your oyster and you can make the most complicated colorful oc you want, live your truth
