Hey everyone. I just wanted to leave this comment to say that I wasn't aware that Cloverway took over the show around seasons three and four, I should've researched this better. Hope you all enjoy the video regardless of that mistake.
At least we finally have all five seasons dubbed and uncut by ViZ. If it weren't for the 90's dub, we wouldn't have had this amazing dub today, so that's something to be thankful for.
When I was a child, watching Sailor Moon, the alteration of the gay male characters and their female partners into cousins was particularly frustrating. It was understandable that viewers were upset with the change from lovers to cousins. The extent of censorship by Cloverway was excessive, and the company's dissolution can be seen as a just outcome for their disregard of the fans' appreciation for Sailor Moon.
due to the fact the DiC/Cloverway failed to renew the license for the anime and because of the disputes between Toei Animation and Naoko Takeuchi over the meddling of her anime series, as a result of this is why the fifth and final season was never dubbed until now by viz media. The reason why we have a new dub of sailor moon is because of Naoko Takeuchi having say who plays the characters
I hate the DiC/Cloverway dub of Sailor Moon so goddamn much! This entire dub felt like a joke to the original anime. Unnecessary censorship, flanderizing characters, bad voice-acting and plot inconsistencies! They took away alot of emotional moments in OG Sailor Moon and treated them like nothing! I’m still suprised that people still praise this terrible dub. Don’t get me wrong, I respect anyone who likes the old SM dub, but I’m tired of hearing people call this the “bEsT dUb” over and over again. The only reason it gets praise is because of nostalgia and you can’t change my mind!
Censorship is so messed up.. as we all probably agree. It could have been a good thing exposing kids to a healthy LGBTQ relationship in their favorite cartoon like Haruka and Michiru’s relationship. Making it less taboo by a little exposure may have helped children that were a little confused about themselves come to accept their difference from society’s “norm” later in life - maybe even doing away with having a “relationship norm” all together (in a perfect world......). I hope this makes sense lol. Thank you, I love sailor moon! This was a great video!
Here in Italy they did change the names of the Sailor Senshi: Usagi was Bunny, Ami was Amy, Rei was Rea (which may refer to Rea Silvia, mother of the founders of Rome and MARS Priestess), Makoto was Morea and Minako was Marta.
Haruka became Heles, Michiru Milena , Setsuna Sydia, and Hotaru Ottavia.
On the LGBT side of things Zoycite and Fisheye became women but Michiru and Haruka were 'very good friends' not saying that they were -D-A-T-I-N-G but not really taking steps to erase it either.
The problem came with the final season and the Sailor S&M... er, the Starlights, three female aliens who disguised themselves magically as men and turned back into women when it was time to don their stripperrific Sailor Uniform and fight crime.
Child psychiatrists were aghast and one of them, Vera Slepoj, even declared that the Starlights were going to 'turn little boys gay' and so they made ridiculous choices to make it seem like the Starlights were the Three Lights' TWIN SISTERS (and it lasted only two eps) and the finale was only aired fully once because of Sailor Moon fighting the final battle without any clothes on. The other times it was rebroadcast in the 90s it was cut to HELL and narrated by Seiya's (male) dubber. The audio version was even added in a compilation CD of the five Italian Sailor Moon openings and called 'Sailor Moon E Il Trionfo Delle Stelle' (Sailor Moon And The Stars' Triumph) from the title of the episode.
The real name of all the sailor scouts, is the same as the Mexican Dub from the 90's. Actually, the Mexican Dub is more akin to the original japanese version, since it didn't censor any scene from the original anime,
Soo... I am wondering. What about the episode where Michiru and Haruka meet for the first time? Was it deleted? 'cause this cousin-thing couldn't possibly work, when they say they "grew up together" ?
In Latin America we got it unedited and all the episodes aired from season 1 to 5, as it usually happens with anime here. It did have some changes, since it was distributed by Cloverway, the Spanish dub used the DiC names for the Inner Senshis and Darien, Molly, Rini, etc. the Outers had the Japanese names, and they were also called Sailor Scouts, the original music was kept and it didn't have any image edits, but they did change Zoisite and Fish Eye into women. Fortunately they didn't make Haruka and Michiru cousins.
Canada's decision to alter Sailor Moon was disappointing, and it would have been preferable if Optimum Productions had maintained the show's original, uncensored form.
