I always liked Bob Hope, his movies, his humor, his taking the time to entertain the troops, his occasional specials during the week evenings, and so forth. Even as a school age kid. The one joke I remember as a kid was , he said, “Me and my wife went out to eat one time, and I told the waitress that we wanted something low in calories, low in salt, and low in fat—what do you have???  She said, ‘Water.’” As a kid I thought that was pretty funny.  As an adult, over the years I have heard some rather unflattering things—but you know, who is perfect. Besides, I think what’s on TV or whatever nowadays is much worse. 🌻

I actually met Bob Hope a couple of times at his Toluca Lake house. A cinematographer friend of mine was a friend of his and brought me over there one day because they had something to talk about and wanted to introduce me. Bob Hope was gracious and welcome me and then said let the old man talk about their business. Why don’t you go check out my library. It’s down the hall into the right he said and he said oh there’s somebody else there. I hope he won’t trouble you too much. I walked down the hallway and into the library and there are set Jerry Seinfeld and of course I was a bit stunned and said hello Mr. Seinfeld, what are you doing here he said learning from the greatest of course Bob has the largest collection of jokes of anybody in the world and I just thought I’d freshen up my act by seeing what it is I have not yet known. Needless to say I didn’t stay long and I think I went over there one other time and actually had a list of topics. I wanted to try to find jokes for because I at one time was a comedy writer. Those days are long since gone, but it was interesting to see. I never expected to meet Bob. Hope seeing as I’ve seen him growing up on black-and-white TV as a child and to me movie stars were people who lived in a fantasy world. Now I know that most of them actually are locked into their dungeons and can’t get out because of their management and agents and all those who feed off them. I feel sorry for anybody who becomes a big celebrity because in their own and controlled for the rest of their life until they’ve bleed them dry and then they’re on their own.
