In this video, I interviewed a Japanese medaka breeder about the strains he is currently developing.

It is winter in Japan right now, so it is the off-season for medaka. However, at his breeding facility, many medaka were already swimming as they wait for spring to arrive.

I asked him many questions on behalf of viewers — including how to raise fry, how he selects and pairs breeding fish, and other common concerns about keeping medaka.

Thank you, Mr. Inoue and Mr. Hiro for a very important and informative video! I am a hobbyist who fell in love with Medaka and sort of accidentally began raising them. I have a community tank with some lovely Medaka and I noticed that several were carrying eggs. When I moved some of the plants into a small tank with shimp, one day I noticed some hariko! There must have been eggs on the plants. So I have moved them into steadily larger plastic containers and now have about two dozen juvenile Medaka who live in the community tank (heated to about 78F) in a screened off fry cage to protect them. That way they are protected from larger fish and receive the flowing well-conditioned water. They are beautiful! About five are like the Red Emperor, another five are black, and the rest look like either platinum or like the Wedding Medaka adults in the community tank, and are bright and white! I am feeding them regular fry food and frozen brine shrimp, and they are growing fast. They are about a third the size of an adult and are about two months old. Now I wonder...what should I do? Any advice is appreciated! And thanks so much for this video and your guidance.

Je rêve de venir au moins 1 mois (le logement au Japon coûte cher ) pour apprendre les bases auprès d'un vrai éleveur comme lui. Cette espèce commence à peine à se diffuser en France, je débute un modeste élevage d'une dizaine de variétés (sûrement très commues au Japon) sur mon nouveau terrain en banlieue parisienne. Je pensais être à 10% de connaissance mais je me rend compre qu'1% est déjà prétentieux.. en France, ce n'est que depuis peu de temps que cette espèce se popularise (on est encore au niveau animalerie poisson rouge dans des mini aquariums et betta splendens basiques dans des 5l ) .. ce poisson a tellement de potentiel dans cette région fraiche, de plus de 10 millions d'habitants, dont certains ont des jardins mais la majorité des balcons.. Mais s'obstinent à maltraiter des poissons rouges et Koi par ignorance du Medaka.. Bref, je parle trop.. J'aimerais tellement pouvoir profiter du savoir d'un vrai maitre éleveur japonais un jour, même quelques jours seraient une bénédictions. Mes sincères salutations
