An olive woodworker who treats olive who with olive oil!     i feared i was the only one.

olive oil is good,  it seems biologically poetic to use olive oil on olive wood, the wood should be receptive .olive oil gives a waterproof layer which protects spoons, spatulas and chopping boards.  as a treatment for items made for sale, it means that most people , with olive oil in their kitchen, can re treat the item.

i am currently making one piece cups with handles.  endgrain cups, with the short straws as the bottom of the cup, all  leaked within an hour.. all cups were treated with oil.  i had used a log with cracks
big cracks  were filled with ca glue, all cups were then treated with bees wax inside, playing the heat gun inside the cup to warm the wood so that the liquid wax would get into the wood cells.  this sealed many cups, but cracks bigger than 1mm continued to leak.
i then tried cross grain, as in this video, and four out of seven are watertight for 6 hours, simply with olive oil treatment.  i am sold on side grain cups and using wood without cracks.
As an olive wood worker,, my motto is 'olive wood cracks like a bugger'.
after i cut a tree, i oil the ends of logs before loading into the car, oil them again when i unload them (1hoiur journey), ( i usually cut in over 25 degrees celsius. if i do not oil them, they are cracked by the time i get home) within three days, i paint end grain sealer on them.  this has reduced cracking from 50 % of logs to 10% .  . all wood hates direct sun, olive especially.
i store my logs on pallets ( so the logs are off the ground) under tarpaulins (rain and sun protection), only the top layer of logs  has cracks, the bottom 1.5 metres are uncracked . i have 11 cubic metres of logs.
the logs i cut in 2024 are now ready to work
