The Forever Winter — Players BROKE The Anti-Shooter (And That's The Point)

The Forever Winter is having an identity crisis — and emergent gameplay might be the reason why.

This is Episode 1 of The Road To Rat King series.

Fun Dog Studios built a survival horror extraction shooter about being nobody, about scavenging in the shadow of war machines that don't even know you exist. They called it the "anti-shooter." But the players didn't stay in the tunnels. They climbed out. They fought back. Some of them are so strong they almost mimic the Rat King.

In this video essay, I explore how emergent gameplay killed the anti-shooter — and why that's the most brilliant thing about The Forever Winter. From the Innards as a Matrix-style Zion, to the Rat King's name hiding the Scavs' entire story arc in plain sight, to the community theories rewriting the story in real time.

UPDATE: I read every comment on this video, especially the big thread about getting jumped at every corner and not being able to just navigate the map.
I took your notes on pacing, repetition, music and the whole stealth debate and turned it into a full follow up video.
I tested pure stealth. Check it out:

If they want us to not be "that guy" then let us navigate around the maps without being jumped at every corner

The devs forgot something very important about people, We yearn to fight dragons. Seeing a horrifying monster may drive 9 out of 10 into hiding for a while but we will want and dream for the day we plunge a blade into it's heart and claim its power and riches for ourselves.

"You are not that guy" they said. They didn't lie - just omitted a single word at the end of that phrase.

YET.

I think the closest thing to the original premise of Forever Winter is "This war of mine". There you actually play as a civilian survivor group just trying to stay out of the crossfire and looking for resources to stay alive.

The theory behind the rat king because it comes back after dying is that the Rat King is actually an autonomous weapon created by the Night Shift AI to harass both sides and potentially take total control of Lost Angels in order to optimize fixing the city back up without the constant bombing.

Personally, I'd prefer the maps and AI get shifted a bit to allow sneaking to be far more viable because avoiding getting into a firefight is rather hard. Just waiting for the AI to burn themselves out on a war until you go and scavenge the leftovers.

I was one of the Water Bears players that basically learned how to dogwalk every enemy in the game, including most types of mechs, all while supplying water to newbies and people that were running out, back in the times when we all had to deal with that daily real-time water drain mechanic. We were players that had 500-1000 hours or more in the game and had become too much for entire armies to handle, and we'd be back in time for vent rat shishkebabs.

"You are not that guy... until you are. ;D"

I like the theory that the Scavengers are actually protected By a smaller rogue AI or The City's of Los Angels Administrative AI that Separated from Europa's AI

And that The Rat king is actually an Avatar Controlled by The City's AI is trying to protect the Scavengers. The AI might see the scavengers as builders or civilians to protect

Since The only Goal of a scavenger is to build and expand the innards, doing something beneficial to the city unlike the endless destruction the other factions are doing.

rainworld is a game about scavenging and avoiding "doing stuff", it makes that fun by having a massive map to explore, vistas to awe at, and really interesting lore.

I've not played this game in a little while, but "you're not that guy" is something I took as a challenge. I felt like I wasn't that guy "yet." A thorn in the side of each and every faction. I might not be the world's hero but I was going to work to crave out my space in the world.

The concept was always going to turn into something else. The devs gave us a world to interact with and as we did it added to the story and the environment. I don't think the devs expected us to just watch and collect scrap. The scavenger gameplay seemed like only a starting point. In a game where you're "not" that guy, players will inevitably find a way to become that guy.

I think the original premise of "you are not that guy" was broken by the game itself first, spelled out blatantly when you look at the list of faction quests with many of them asking you to take out a powerful target like a helicopter, tank or battle mech. The rudimentary AI that is hostile to the player even with high faction reputation also feels like the game is expecting you to be "that guy" at some point.
I kinda wish the game had more polished stealth mechanics and NPC interaction so we actually had the option to play the pure-scavenger fantasy. As it stands, players break the anti-shooter ideal because there isn't really room in the game to do otherwise. By that I mean, it's not like you have a lot of options to stealth around/distract enemies especially when they spawn behind you or their AI bugs out and they just get stuck in a corridor refusing to move, nor does grinding your rep with a faction to "trusted" stop the random grunt or drone from deciding to shoot at you anyway.

Honestly at this point I wish they'd actually made a proper shooter with the cool factions in the setting. Or maybe an RTS. Followed it since it's early concept videos and it's always been kind of strange to me how most of the big 'goals' a player gets are ways to kill the things that used to be outright death if you engaged them, like the railgun with the mechs.

As a Day 1 Player, FW falls into the usual Extraction Shooter loop. You are really out gunned at first but, as you gain more Knowldge and get better Gear you can Skirmish with most NPC using Hit and Run Tactics. Also the "you are not That Guy" tag line was a huge mistake as A LOT of Players (myself included) basically said "oh, do you really want to bet that?" and came out on top multiple times

@feliperisseto9113 1 month ago

This is the single thingt that is special about videogames: The capability of the player to not only interact, but in some cases to change the game with their actions. The possibilities are endless, and It frustrates me that game devs simply don't seem to be interested in that anymore.

@manuellaslo1282 1 month ago

the ratking is a leader: a leader does not rule, does not give commands to follow. a leader walks the path as first, so other see it is possible and then do the same.

the game started as a game about surviving. but anything that can survive under such conditions becomes tough and dangerous. i agree with your conclusion!

@TheMaghorn 1 month ago

The game never really supported that idea of avoidance. It gave you missions that required hunting certain enemies, you were forced to fight through to extraction on most maps, even the promise that the soldiers wouldn't bother you if you didn't present a threat was untrue. Players didn't break the game, it was broken from the start

@marty_debiru 1 month ago

for me FOrever Winter is about the "you are not that guy" until he/she learns and gets strong enough to become "you ARE that guy"

@Xaxp 1 month ago

I would say that it is necessary for the players to get stronger. Picking your fights in the early game is a big part of the gameplay, but leveling up gives you a chance to be more aggressive- to pick your fights less often. But ultimately you still need to consider some enemies are just straight up indestructible, and for me that kind of undercuts the thesis of Forever Winter's worldbuilding. Nobody is (supposed to be) immortal. The world is shredded to pieces and anyone could die for any reason. While that rule goes doubly for the Scavs, it also has to apply for the enemies as a reminder that they're (mostly) human too.

Personally? I think that the Scavs founding their own faction and clearing out a small island of sanity in a world broken by war would strengthen the story- Grimdark is at its most effective when there exists a small glimmer of hope.
