Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living #1 from Dynamite finally reveals the true origin of Thundercats' immortal villain. Declan Shalvey rewrites 40 years of canon.

In Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living #1, writer Declan Shalvey and artist Rapha Lobosco take readers back to "First Earth" — Ancient Egypt, long before the black pyramid ever haunted Lion-O's dreams. The story centers on Wah-Sut, a nameless slave who discovers a forbidden tomb and encounters the Ancient Spirits of Evil. What follows is the most disturbing transformation Mumm-Ra has ever been shown going through, and it rewrites everything fans thought they knew about the devil-priest's beginnings.

This is the second chapter of the 15-part ThunderCats X SilverHawks crossover event. Wah-Sut's choice in this issue sets up the Mumm-Ra we'll meet across the entire saga.

After 40 years, Mumm-Ra has a new real name — Ra-Mese-Mi-Atumu — and an origin that is surprisingly good. What hits harder for you: the cartoon's mysterious origin, the Wildstorm advisor angle, or what Shalvey just did?

Ah, how I wish that Thundercats 2011 had been a success. And that Thundercats Roar stayed a fever dream.

I always liked to think that Mumm-Ra was a corrupted thunder cat

I was surprised by this. I wasn’t searching for anything about Thundercats, and yet this appeared in my feed. I’m 52, and not a comic guy. But I was definitely into 80s cartoons like a lot of guys my age. So of course I was into this show. And I’m surprised by how good I thought this was.

Having a scenario in which friends SHOULD have helped one another, but the mistrust from the evil one, lead to a great injustice. A breaking that causes the transformation. Wow, this is exceptionally written.

I always thought Thundercats were Aliens and Mumm-Ra was a native that was just defending his home world from these weird cat invaders.

Original series thundercats was always a must after getting out of school. Thundercats, Godzilla, sailor moon, reboot, pirates of the dark waters. Cartoon Network had a nice power block back then between 2-4 central time

Mumm ra was just trying to protect his planet against a bunch of alien invaders

And here I thought Mumm-Ra was casted out from the thundercats 600 years before and everyone just forgot.

This is definitely a dope video and I have to admit that Mumm-Ra's origin is pretty interesting and totally awesome too.
In addition to that, the fact that Mumm-Ra's humanoid friend seems like the writer of this comic is connecting Mumm-Ra to the mutant leader of toad/lizard men of the Thundercats series.
