I was 11 in 1961 and grew up in Liverpool. For a short time, it was the hub of the universe. Happy days.

Brilliant documentary. This was, or rather is, my culture. Teenager in Surrey 1960 to 65, miles away from Liverpool, but as the video commented "Liverpool ruled the world". These guys brought me so much entertainment. It is always gratifying to hear some of them who were happy with what they achieved and sad to hear of the problems that others encountered.
The only Liverpool band I ever saw live were the Foremost which was at the Hereford Teacher Training college where we used to go to meet girls. They were one of the most accomplished bands I ever saw - and I've seen many top artists over the years.
Rock on!
(and cheers for memories of John Peel as well, of course)

Saw so many of these GROUPS at the Oasis in Manchester in the '60's.No alcohol but a brilliant  night guaranteed. The best time for music ever.  I'm 82 now, played in a band and lived it. Believe me, this was music's peak for me. Thank you for posting brought it all back.

Remember watching these series on BBC and found them fascinating. Looking forward (if there is one!) to the Birmingham "family tree" - Move, ELO etc. and I've subscribed.

Favorite Billy J song is 'i'll keep you satisfied' followed by 'bad to me'

I watched this documentary along will all the other Rock Family Trees at the time of original broadcast in the mid 90s, hard to believe that they're all taking about a scene that was only 30 or so years ago, it's double that now

Great documentary👍

That was so good

I wish things had turned out better for Tony Jackson.

Brilliant interviews.  There’s something about sung  Liverpool accent that cuts through in rock n roll. You can hear the Beatles repertoire was clearly the backbone for many Mersey bands.

Can't count the times we threw 'Little Children' on. Had that one memorized before The Beatles came home.😂

Some other guy, yeah!

The Majestic ballroom in Birkenhead hosted every last one of these bands I saw the Beatles there in 1961 (i think) and so many others of the day, great vid sent it to my sister she sang with Gerry Marsden later on when he was doing the club circuit this was when ordinary people could afford to have a night out.

Great t see Tony Jacskon who seems a real nice fella! RIP! Great documentary this...just seen it for the first time!

None of us had hi-fi - reserved for the rich classical dads. We listened on portable record players and transistor radios - all with puny speakers.
Shel Talmy (producer) worked on the principle that any song to be a hit must be distinctively different with the firkst 10 seconds to any other song at the time and noticeable on the mediocre equipment we listeners had. Listen to the variety we had them: an amazingly creative time. And to think that The Beatles wrote, recorded, played over 100 originals in about 3 years - all entirely different from any other they wrote (no forumula; just creativity!)
76yo near-deaf and near-death (hahaha) retiree.

I loved the Undertakers, Jackie Lomax and that sax, mashed potatoes...brilliant !!!!!!!

Great stories. Thank you. Part of my life.

Excellent!  A lot of the stuff I knew but so much I didn''t! John Peel, a walking encyclopedea of music, a lovely guy I had the pleasure to meet a couple of times when I was road manager for for the band Andromeda which Peel had championed in his Top Gear radio show and for whom he also got some gigs. An amazing knowledge of everything music!

This is wonderful as I grew up in the USA and did not know much beyond the most famous from the UK and this digs into the weeds of English rock and roll, great stuff!

Music Loving Johnny Plee - God I miss John Peel
