I've never met a person who doesn't like it. A valuabe war classic. And the march is imortal.

Watched with my dad in early 60's.  He, a WW2 vet in ETO (not that it really matters) teared up as the prisoners marched into camp.  "Why are you crying dad?" "To whistle under those conditions . . . . "

Compared to what actually happened to the POWs forced to work on that railroad what the movie portrayed was a summer camp vacation

I went  to see it as a lad in the early 1970s in Harrogate cinema with my mate & his father,i didn't have a  clue what film i was going to see ,i just  remembered being transfixed throughout the movie,i  seemed very quiet on the ten mile journey home, when i got home my Sunday roast was ready,my parents had seen the film they asked me what i thought of the film i said yeah i enjoyed it immensely, they dug deeper, then out of knowhere i suddenly became overawed with emotion & burst into tears i couldn't quite pinpoint why.my father seems to conclude it was possibly because I'd never seen the heroe killed in a film before.i couldn't to this day remember the reasons but I've seen the film multiple times since though i dont breakdown anymore it still fills me with nostalgia.

So e years ago I came across the film location in Sri Lanka. Just a cardboard sign with a little arrow saying Bridge over the river Kwai. I followed the sign and an old lady came up with an amazing album documenting the film. The dolly tracks were still visible where the cameras had run. Following a path the Forrest opened and there it was the sight where the bridge had stood. No bridge of course it was blown up in the move, but the post holes in the sandstone were there. The scene where the bridge is blown was so vivid I. My mind. As I was retracing my steps back along the path a little old man came up with the book of photos. He introduced himself and explained that he was the boy who rescues William Holden in the rowing boat.
He explained that he was in the movie because it was filmed on his families land.
It was such a moment to envisage the young boy leaning over William Holden in the movie and the lovely old man in front of me. What a fantastic and poignant moment that was. All by sheer chance as the sight was certainly could have been overlooked at that time. If you find yourself in Sri Lanka maybe watch the film again and visit the location. It is an incredible experience.

I must say that this particular movie left a deep impression on the pre teen little boy who watched it back in the seventies! At the time I actually thought it was a real event!

This documentary about the making of this movie is as good in its own way as the movie itself, a very worthy companion piece.

The consulting engineers were Husband & Co of Sheffield. I worked there in the early 80's, clearing out a store found an original cinema poster signed by all the stars.

Hayakawa is a fascinating actor. He was a US silent movie star and a huge heartthrob.

I saw this  film in 1957 when it first came out,l was 7 years old,and it always stuck with me,-l have seen it many times since on TV ,facinating to hear about the making of it,-the actors were fantastic in it,-and it deserved all its acclaim,-when you think of films today with all there special effects etc,-and then you see  what they achieved working in those conditions and all the other setbacks on the set to produce such a masterpiece of film history,--incredible,

The comment by one the engineers who worked on the film and in WWII been dropped in occupied Europe,  'incidents with knives, that  sort of thing'  .  English understatement at its finest.

Excellent documentary on one of the great Hollywood-funded British war films, with an unforgettable performance from Alec Guinness.

An important film for me, as my father was an officer and served mainly in Burma. All war movies dealt with the Nazis and this was an exception. One of the moments to look out for shows the genius of Guinness as an actor. When he is knocked down by the mortar explosion, he picks himself up, stoops down - quite unnecessarily  in a moment of crisis - to pick up his hat, and then dusts it off, before putting it back on. In that one  simple gesture, he sums up his character perfectly.

Without question one of the finest motion pictures to have ever been produced.

This is in my top 10 of if it's on, I'll watch it. ❤

A friend of mine, the late Martin Strutt, worked for the engineering consultants who designed the bridge for the movie.

My dad took me to see the film when it first came out, I loved it.  Many years later my wife and I holidayed in Thailand and did a tour.  On out last day we stopped at a hotel near the bridge, for a meal.  We walked down to a platform and sat at the table, we could see the bridge location.  We ate a beautiful  meal while a TV played the film, it was strange being there.  After we went a couple of miles up the road to a village hall close to the bridge location, the walls were covered in stills of the stars with locals and bridge construction  shots.  Days later we went into Kandy, the botanical gardens are seen in the film when William Holden goes to the British  HQ, he is seen driving through the gates, they had not changed.

My favorite movie. I've seen it 100 times.

My father was there as a dutch prisoner of war on the river Kwai. He said the movie was well made. The whistling was a true part of the movie. My dad could whistle beautifully.

"One of the ( BEST ) movies that I have seen in my lifetime  ! !"    "7 Acaademy Awards ( Oscars ) and amazing performances and filming  ! !"
