For years I have been dreaming of photographing the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia, and finally the time has come. Unfortunately, my experience was not as euphoric as expected. Large crowds of people and terrible photography conditions soured the experience, but all it took was one thing to change that.

I hope you learn a valuable lesson from this. IE: search out your own unique locations. You may find it increases your sales as you may be the only one with that unique location recorded on film, so to speak!

It's like going to Yellowstone National Park. Instead of taking pictures of the wild animals, I take pictures of the 1000s of people taking pictures of the animals.

Yeah, this is the unfortunate problem created by social networks like Instagram. Everybody with a bit of cash flocks to the same spots. I live in Madeira Island and I cannot do any sort of landscape photography anymore, mostly due to the fact that there are humans or human made objects everywhere. The saddest part is that the Island is suffering a lot...I mean a LOT!

This is why I feel lucky that there are numerous salt-lakes near where I live (Western Australia) - nothing as large, exotic, or grand as Uyuni, but I usually have them all to myself, particularly handy for astro landscapes. They are amazing places as they change so much with the seasons - from dry, crusty, pure white salt pans, to reflective mirror-like shallow lakes with dead trees thrusting up like skeletal fingers.

Oh yeah, and I can attest first hand that a dip in salt-lake water is instadeath for cameras and lenses!

This is in part the "tragedy of the commons". It applies to so many aspects of human behavior. Everyone out for themselves with little if any consideration for everyone else. That and it's also the pain that comes with trying to make photos in a popular setting. But at least you were able to make something of it.

I really feel you. It is so annoying when there are people in your way. But I always remind myself how I could be equally annoying to others. That is one of the skills any good philosopher needs to practice and that is patience.
