Garrett Vitanza takes on a lovely ride through an incredible amount of information about Caravaggio, his story, and and his painting process and how it relates to what we do here at the atelier.

So interesting. I'm exploring art as a layman. Read books and listen to lectures, but not an artist myself. Fascinating to discover the methods used. I always thought a blank canvas was the beginning of art so was enthralled by the notion of 'preparing the ground'.
I visit the National Gallery London England next week and will look and view with more tools in my toolbox.
Thank you.

I am puzzled as to why lecturers often hesitate to inform their audiences that artists, as early as the Renaissance and beyond, employed the camera obscura.
Some of the most renowned painters, whom we regard as unparalleled masters and near-deities, made use of this device—which explains the absence (or scarcity) of preserved sketches, their tendency to begin directly on the canvas, and the minimal alterations from inception to completion.
And one more thing: If I were to down a shot every time the lecturer uttered "uuhh," I would be utterly inebriated and unconscious within the first five minutes of the video. The frequency of "uuhh" only intensifies as the lecture progresses toward the end of the video.

What a strange way of using the word pentimento,,, ? According to my understanding this word has a different meaning. A pentimento is an alteration to a painting, created during the painting of the original work. Pentimenti are invisible to the naked eye in the finished painting, but may later become visible through chemical changes of the paint or through certain modern technical examinations. Pentimento in Italian is repentance.

A couple of corrections to your lecture: At about 24:40 you refer to the painting as Card SharKs when in fact the name of the painting is "Card Sharps". Later on at 25:45 you say there is a Chess board on the edge of the table. It is Not. It is a form of Backgammon. You can see the dice. Hard to take your comments as fact when you do not know the details.
