You know you’re an enthusiast if you listen to this from start to finish, rewinding bits to make sure you’ve not missed a word!! 😅

Great video, thanks.  It would be even better to show the screen, while explaining the Homely app.

It would be good if you could show screenshots of the laptop screens when you’re talking about stuff on there. It would help understand the concepts I think. Good work though, I’m moving into a house with a heat pump soon so learning lots from your channel.

So refreshing to listen to an earnest technical person not the sales pitch!

We need this in California! Heat pumps are rare here- heating is mostly forced air gas- but we are a cooling dominated climate and have wide price swings on a daily basis. I have manually defeated most of the logic in my Nest thermostats and forced them to overcool midday when solar power is abundant and prices are low. That makes my house mostly able to coast through the high cost period from 4-9pm. The public here is not used to time of use metering yet and have no idea that the lowest cost and greenest approach is no longer to minimize kWh used but to buy the kWh at the right time. Electricity rates are high and Californians pay dearly to cool their homes (my peak rate is 58 cents per kWh). Nothing is being sold here to adjust to the market shift. All we have is demand curtailment that makes people uncomfortable and defers load, but nothing to improve comfort and pull demand forward. And these are simple systems, the vast majority are single speed on-off control.

If you encounter problems with your heat pump, Homely refuse to give you access to your own heat pump data, you are on your own without any data.  Be vey careful which controller you use.

Hi Adam. YouTube is messing with the algorithms. I’m getting your stuff weeks in arrears with nothing showing in the library. Ciao

In the netherlands we also have this. But electric flat fee rates are still very cheap compared to average dynamic pricing. So it is not worth the hassle.

Dynamic prices are steep nowadays on peak hours which totally ruins the benefits. There are a lot of days that are cloudy and windstill.

If you’re interested enough in heat pump performance to watch this video, then you probably won’t like homely.

It doesn’t give you any data apart from stat target temp and current stat temp.

If you want to know anything like flow rates, flow and return temperatures, kw use/generation, COP etc then you have to call your installer.

What happens if your installer goes bust? They don’t know.

The icing on the cake is that something as basic as time of use tariff optimisation is hidden behind an annual subscription.

How did they get on with the grant Heat pump with homely? I have a grant and would be keen for homely too

The thumb down is for homely not for you channel. I have tried to buy this controller, not a chance (i'm from Romania). But anyway, thx to the dude, so I have learned how to use modbus, home assistant and how to make my own "controller". Far better that homely box installed thru installer. Yea, right...

Or better still dont use retrofit wall insulation at all. More harm than good.

My installer is pushing me to install the homely Samsung optimiser, but my gut feel is that it’s adding a whole lot of potential downsides (upfront cost, subscription cost, vendor bankruptcy, hardware failure, battery changes) and adds nothing more than a well set weather compensation curve that can be achieved with a basic understanding of the standard  control system anyway. Has anyone had any genuinely useful experiences with it please beyond it enabling you to use it as time saving tool?

They need to scale up fast as they are trying to do what gridX AI have been working on, except gridX integrates with Vaillant already. I’ll hopefully be one of the first UK customers to get Soly Brain based on gridX tech. Looking forward to seeing the results.

Very confusing

Ohh, (~32:45) the "Illusion of Control" is far more important than you think to a wide x-section of community. There's a clash between the "don't care" and "do care" home makers!  And it's not a techno-phobe vs techno-phile spilt either!
The need to understand human (cognitive) behaviour (e.g. the bit about set points and minimum temp) is often forgotten in all this technical research (been there, done that; it's a journey ;-)

45:00 It's a bit like using a battery to store electricity when the price is cheaper.  So the house is the battery, the outside is the Mains and the heat is like the electricity.  The heat pump will only take power from the Mains (heat), when the cost of doing so, is low enough or when it makes sense to do so, ie if there is a real demand for it.

I would love to here updates on this topics which at the end reaches far beyond what was called heatpump.
It becomes an energy management system coming from the biggest consumer in a household in middle and northern europe.
It is a broad approach - but I like to see the slow and steady control approach even though the remote or cloud part is not my part or I might misunderstood that. We run evcc as our current center to use surplus energy from the roof for charging and water heating via heatpump cylinder but will replace that with a usual heatpump from china which comes with an open modbus protocol and support, also listed in the BAFA agency as highly efficient.

If you wanna connect to the key house infrastructure via modbus then there will  be a lot going on and has to be checked if that has to be wired too like inverter +smartmeter + battery + wallbox and heatpump - OK, inverter and battery and smartmeter might be on 1 modbus line.

And if not via wire then things are not getting easier with modbus via 433 Mhz wifi cause there you have connection or range issues and what not.

At the end people will ask why they should need a cloud as an energy management system which homely is becoming soon like all the others in that sector like evcc which started from Surplus ev charging. The have done all the setup but that is diy and done via yaml , not by installers. And they deal with 100s of inverters, wallbox chargers, smart meters and at the end surplus usage of heatpumps.
