The McKinsey Solve Redrock Game presents one of the three assessment components of the McKinsey Solve Game, or McKinsey Problem Solving Game (PSG). You need to pass the Redrock Study before you tackle the two other McKinsey Solve Game components – the Sea Wolf Game and the Sustainable Futures Lab.

The Redrock Game is designed to assess your quantitative reasoning skills. It takes you to fictional Redrock island, where you need to tackle an environmental challenge, such as controlling a wildlife population or preserving biodiversity. However, this is just a disguise for in fact very tough mathematical puzzles.

The Redrock Game consists of the first Study part and the second Cases part. In this video, I take you through the Study part with investigation, analysis and report phases of a fully-fledged Redrock Study simulation.

In Q1 and Q3, why are we not accounting for the fact that male and female deer might breed during month 5 of spring at 20% breeding rate? Why are fawns only calculated for surviving females in winter when the breeding happens in spring?

Thanks for the video! For question 2, don't you think we also need to take account of 80% of all surviving adult females to the sub-area population? Given additional 60 fellow deers were added during the winter.

I think that you made a mistake in Q1. I would answer it like this: Month 1: (Sum of total Deer)*0.9 - Deer killed by wolf = R1
Month 2: (R1)*(8/9) - Deer killed by wolf = R2
Month 3: R2*(0.9) - Deer killed by wolf= R3.

As you might notice this is different than you way of answering since The factor of deer killed by winter affects the result of the previous month and then you substract the deer killed by wolf. What do you think?

Hi there! I’m a bit confused about Question 2. It says, “If fallow deer are added \<during winter>… estimate population after 3 winter months: 24:29,” but then the explanation assumes that the deer are added at the beginning of winter.

Because of that, I interpreted the wording as meaning that the deer are added sometime during the winter, which led me to take 180 deer into account instead of 120.

Could you please clarify whether the deer should be considered as added at the beginning of winter?

hey i believe you have made a mistake in q3. you did not substract wolf killings in t=4. your calculation assumes that all female deers after t=3 can breed. it would be correct to take the answer from q2 and substract 0,4*5 and then calculate the share of female deer in t=5.

Hey. You got the answer "293.4" in Q2, but you rounded it up to 294. Shouldn't the nearest integer be 293 instead? Because the decimal is below 0.5.

I am confused in q3. would the female deer who survived through the winter have a 80% reproduction rate while the newly added ones would have 20%. Meaning (51.75*0.8)+(120*0.2) = 65.4 (fawns). Can someone please clarify if this is the correct thinking

I took my test 2 weeks ago but I haven’t received any response yet… Idk if I passed or not nd at the same time there’s this voice telling me to start preparing for the case interview,so I honestly don’t know what to do 🥲Knowing that I did pretty badly on the last game because I didn’t really understand the test properly but for the other tests like Redrock and Sea I think I did pretty well even though I didn’t attempt the last case in Redrock
What do u think please 👀

In Q3, when calculating the number of female deer for option 1, why wouldn't the correct calculation be Q2 result * (HW (F) + RW (F) + 120) / (HW (M) + HW (F) + RW (M) + RW (F) + 120). If all the death factors are applied equally, then result from Q2 is the end state with additional female deer. Adding 120 in the share equation should fix the share. Yet, result then turns out to be 136.5 while yours is 138.15. I would say it's happening because once you deduct 9 wolf killings from Q1 result, we avoid its effect on the new female deer.

I may be missing something, but I still think the Option 1 calculation is inconsistent with the information given.

The new females are introduced at the start of Month 1, and the prompt states that wolves hunt male and female deer proportionately. I therefore do not see a basis for excluding the 120 newly introduced females from winter wolf predation. Doing so effectively creates an unstated rule where the new females experience winter mortality but are exempt from wolf attacks.

Using the Q2 result, I would calculate surviving females after winter as:

294×(40+35+120/105+40+120+35+120) =136.5

rather than 138.15.

There also seems to be a separate timing issue: breeding occurs in Month 5, so shouldn’t Month 4 wolf predation be deducted before applying the 80% breeding rate?

Under that interpretation, the final result is closer to 384 rather than 387. Have I misunderstood an assumption that newly introduced deer are not exposed to wolf predation during winter? If so, where is that stated in the case information?

Hey, thanks so much for this walkthrough, it's been a massive help for my prep! I have two quick questions that are driving me a bit crazy.

First, on the rounding in Q2: 293.4 was rounded to 294. I thought the mathematically correct way was to round up if the decimal is 5 or greater, and round down if it is less than 5 (which would be 293). Also, looking closely at the text on the screen, the prompt just says 'round to the closest integer' and doesn't actually say 'round up.' I feel like I am missing something important here, please would love your thoughts!

Second, regarding the logic for Option 1 in Q3. Since we established in Q2 that the total surviving herd is 294 (when the 120 females are added at the start of winter), shouldn't we apply the new female ratio to that final number? The new combined herd is 420 deer (225 Male / 195 Female). If we take the 294 total survivors and multiply by the new female share (195/420), we get 136.5 surviving females. Reusing the Q1 baseline survivors (like at 30:11) seems to mathematically shield the 120 new females from the winter wolf kills, even though the prompt says they are hunted proportionally. Plus, if we do the math that way, we won't be able to logically arrive back at the 294 total herd size if we account for the males.

Any clarification would be hugely appreciated!
