By the end of April 1945, the Battle of Berlin had reached a climax. The Soviet Red Army, which had encircled the city, waged brutal street fighting against a desperate mix of German troops. The defense was fierce, but ultimately futile against the overwhelming numerical and artillery superiority of the Soviets. The symbolic end began on April 30, when Adolf Hitler and his wife took their own lives in the underground Führerbunker while Soviet troops were only a few streets away. After his death, the remaining German command realized that further resistance was futile. On the night of May 1, General Hans Krebs attempted to negotiate a conditional surrender, which the Soviets flatly rejected and demanded full capitulation. In the early hours of May 2, General Helmuth Weidling, commander of the Berlin defense zone, finally gave the order for a ceasefire. He surrendered the city to Soviet Marshal Vasily Chuikov. Although sporadic fighting continued for a short time, the fall of the Reichstag and the raising of the Soviet flag marked the definitive collapse of the heart of the Nazi regime, effectively bringing the war in Europe to an end.
