I'm old and have been sewing a while. A navy wool suit (a-line skirt and blazer) was a favorite of mine at the time. Fast forward 20 years and my niece wore it for years. That taught me that classic styles in basic colors made in a durable fabric will give the greatest longevity.

I'm back to sewing after 40 years, (I'm 74)  Over the past 12 months I've been through the buying fabric "Because it was cheap", Buying a trendy pattern, ie Style arc Bob , why?. Now I've selected about 9 patterns that suit me, and make them in fabrics that all co-ordinate with each other. It's wonderful to have clothes that fit and will look good together, making lots of different outfits.

I am also a winter coloring,and I also made myself a mustard colored dress the same color as yours.  Every single teacher in high school called me up to inform me that if I felt sick, I should stay home.

This is a fantastic video! Thank you so much! I especially agree with not falling into the trap of sewing the trends and watching out for which patterns and fabric we buy. Gosh, it's so easy to fall into those traps and regret them afterwards. I have way too many patterns at this point and I notice I am starting to tell myself that I don't need that trendy new pattern because I already have another very similar one. Fabric is a whole other beast and I need to keep sewing through it! Happy sewing! PS- I'm so grateful for this hobby right now. (Insert eyeroll emoji and world on fire emoji here).

Thanks for sharing this great roundup! I think altering / fixing / refashioning is such a great way to quickly “unlock” a piece without having to make or buy a whole new garment. One thing I love about your channel is that you show your refashionings / repairs in your monthly roundups.

I totally agree about making clothes that are your style and not the trend. I really love milkmaid dresses but I know they are not flattering on me and they aren’t my style at all so I won’t be making one of the popular milkmaid dress patterns out there. Instead I’ll try to design a milkmaid inspired dress that I know I’ll wear and feel comfortable.

My clothes that I sewed 10-13 years ago are finally being replaced. I've worn them and now they are past mending. My Wal-Mart men's stretch chinos are still looking good after 6 years. Honestly they are the best I've ever bought and I've bought from designer to higher end brands to have them last no longer than 15 months.

I plan on buying some 11 ounce ripstop duck canvas to make achore coat and teo each cargo shorts, cargo capris and cargo.pants. I can now walker longer distances and do some gardening. Can't wait to be rid of my wheelchair. I'm kind of giddy making new stuff for myself.

I just finished and sent  a Hanbok for my preemie grandson in the Seattle area. He is 4 lbs. now.

Thank you for the excellent tips! I have fallen trap to the sewing trends as well and now have a stash of patterns I know I'll never make, as well some fabrics in colors that I know don't flatter me...live and learn!

I think these are great tips for a beginner, especially regarding taking your time, selecting fabric and patterns that suit your style, and looking at your current wardrobe with a fresh perspective!

i feel seen and understood 🤣❤ i recently made a video (which which quite blew up lol) that i've sewn so much but barely wear anything...and i did some thinking about what happened - a lot of it is EXACTLY what you said! You have fun sewing especially as a beginner and you lose touch with your actual wardrobe. Know your style and stop falling for trends and random patterns. Thank you Sarah!

Great tips. I thought you might have included seam sewing techniques as well ( French, flat fell, binding, overlock) because you do such a nice job. I think it was you that used to show the insides of your garments and they were fantastic.

Something close to your topic that I find is true: match the fabric weight, drape, and stretch to the style of the pattern. I have 4 t shirt patterns I go to:  1 is best with med wt drapey knit with less stretch, 1 works with structured non-drape low stretch, 1 with drapey light weight, and 1 with stretchy lt to med weight.

I’ve been trying to be more observant of the details of what I like and it’s sooo helpful. I also measure the dimensions of the clothes I like and transferring it to new patterns to improve on fit. Really liked this vid.
