In 2009, the city officially registered trademarks for โThird Capital of Russiaโ after competing with Nizhny Novgorod, boosted by President Vladimir Putin reportedly using the phrase during Kazan's 1,000th anniversary celebrations in 2005.
The nickname is justified by its thousand-year history as the capital of the Khanate of Kazan, its unique Tatar-Russian multicultural heritage (symbolized by the UNESCO-listed Kremlin), strong economy, high quality of life, and role as a major sports and events hub (Universiade, World Cup). It positions Kazan as a dynamic, historic alternative to Moscow and St. Petersburg for tourism, investment, and federal symbolism.
