The title and the synopsis just make me think this would be a complete satire of how narrow Asian-American media is made to be (i.e shit like that netflix show “Dang”) but honestly the story seems a bit TOO sincere
I actually don’t think the artstyle or lack of backgrounds is particularly bad as long as the characters and writing are great. It’s the opposite problem where sometimes a book has great art but the writing and characters are so flat and boring that it makes me put it down.
For this one I think the flat writing and characters pair perfectly with the flat artstyle to make something truly unremarkable, which is the actual problem.
I could instantly tell this took inspiration from scott pilgrim just from the cover but omg this whole thing took HEAVY HEAVY inspiration from Scott Pilgrim, down to where they go on a date, and the names of the characters.
I think if she wanted to show knives’ POV of her relationship with scott in a comic, that would be really interesting and sure you could include more aspects about her culture, but it just feels like she wanted to do that but also wanted to shove in her ocs and shitty writing.
I love that page in Lindsey Cheng dates a white boy where Lindsey(Whom's heart is promised to a man of caucasian descent) says "Its dating a white boy time!" and dates a white boy all over the place
24:57 her Asian parents sent her to an art school meanwhile my parents wouldn’t hesitate to chop off both of my arms if I considered wanting to become a full time artist ☠️
I partially agree with you on the story, but it feels like you were trashing the artstyle too much. I understand we all have preferences, but it really impacted how I viewed this review.
Part of that could personally be because I actually do like the character designs, and the artstyle, but it felt like you just kept bringing it up unnecessarily.
Imo there's nothing wrong with the art style or character design but that doesn't change the fact that the world building was tacky and the inspiration from Scott Pilgrim is SOOOO on your face that it annoys me.
The empty backgrounds and the 2D Alpaca felt like intentional artistic choices, and to me, art is all about intent.
You could say you don't like it, or that it doesn't work with the narrative, but to bash the art style when it all seemed intentional felt uncalled for.
The white boy looks like a rip off of Sanji. Also it really sucks that Lindsey is just such a terrible character, they could have made it that Lindsey matures or something near the end like how Knives does and Knives actually gains a lot of maturity because of leaving Scott. But nooo. Lindsey is an stereotypical shy Asian girl with barely any character development...
It looks like a tumblr web comic and I’ve seen web comics from there that are way more visually appealing than this. Also this comic feels like a checklist of what NOT to do on a date.
"Lindsey Cheng dates a White Boy" comic book is terrible
