Next time you look at the calories on the back of a packet or the nutritional breakdown of a recipe, remember that number doesn't tell you the whole story.
It says nothing about the nutrients, the quality of the food, how satisfying it'll be, or even how many calories your body will actually absorb.
To unpack it all, I'm joined by Professor Giles Yeo, Professor of Molecular Neuroendocrinology at the University of Cambridge, MBE, and author of the brilliant book Why Calories Don't Count.
We cover:
00:00 Why calorie counting doesnβt tell the full story
06:59 Where the calories on food labels come from
10:25 Do we absorb all the calories we eat?
15:25 Are all carbohydrates absorbed in the same way?
19:18 Why protein and fibre keep you fuller
31:31 Why is it so hard to keep weight off?
34:45 What to check instead of calories
40:23 Does calories in/calories out actually work?
44:25 How to reduce stress eating
48:07 Does intermittent fasting help with weight loss?
53:12 Should breakfast be your biggest meal?
55:30 Potatoes vs crisps
58:10 Whole fruit vs fruit juice
1:01:57 Nuts vs protein bars
1:07:19 Whole nuts and seeds vs nut butter
1:09:11 Are avocados too high in calories?
1:11:47 Whole fruit vs smoothies and juice
As always, thanks for listening!
