Abandoned Dreams examines the abandoned- and derelict-vessel crisis along British Columbia’s coast and the environmental, financial, social and regulatory problems that allow old boats to be left in public anchorages, bays and on beaches.

The documentary investigates the root causes of vessel abandonment, including the cost of ownership and disposal, limited marina space, inadequate ownership tracking and enforcement, and the shortage of accessible boat-recycling facilities.

It features the work of the Dead Boats Disposal Society and John Roe, including the process of identifying and assessing vessels, navigating ownership and authorization requirements, planning removals and ensuring contaminated materials are handled appropriately. Footage from Cadboro Bay begins at approximately 6:15.

End-of-life vessels may contain fuel, oil, batteries, antifouling coatings, fibreglass, plastics, metals and other materials that can contaminate marine waters, beaches, intertidal habitat and nearshore sediments.
