We lost some bright, young kids in the school shootings in Kahramanmaraş and Şanlıurfa. First and foremost, my deepest condolences go out to the families of the children who lost their lives. I wish I could say, "I hope we never see this kind of brutality again," but... we're scientists. We're science enthusiasts. We know that when certain conditions are met, the natural consequences of those conditions are inevitable. Given enough time, even highly improbable events become almost a certainty—they will happen over and over again. That's why today, I want to talk to you about the underlying conditions that pave the way for these kinds of massacres. Because right now, everyone on social media is throwing out a different theory: video games, TV series, toy guns, economic problems, ignorance, genetics, a lack of police in schools, gun ownership, kids being pushed into crime, psychological issues, bad parenting, careless teachers and school administrators, the new generation "losing its way," government policies, capitalism, and hundreds of other reasons you could think of... Also, as someone who has spent over 13 years living in the U.S.—the epicenter of these kinds of shootings—and specifically in Texas, the capital of gun ownership, surrounded by rural folks with very deeply rooted opinions on this issue, while also closely following the scientific research on the topic, I think I can offer you some real perspective here. Gather 'round, let's talk.
